Masak Masak is a new casual Malaysian eatery on Smith St in a space where a couple of generic cafes have previously failed. In reinvigorating the space and changing its use I think it will do well, because there’s been nothing else like in the area since the closure of Roundhouse Roti a few years ago.

lunch at the Gipps St Canteen in Collingwood

The Gipps St Canteen replaced a generic old school lunch bar in late 2011, and I’ve cycled past a few times meaning to stop in and eventually found time to do so. The welcome is friendly but the outdoor seats are rickety, so be careful how you sit down. Black garlic wrote the first (and so far only) review. They do coffee, sandwiches and salads. They make a very good coffee and I had a tasty salami and olive calzone.…

lunch at Mina No Ie in Collingwood

Mina No Ie is a newish Japanese cafe from the owners of Cibi, which has been open for four years now and is also in Collingwood. I had lunch there with the girlfriend on a recent weekend and we liked it a lot. I had the massive miso soup with onigiri and she had the ‘complete’ plate, which is a kind of tasting plate of various dishes. The prawn and tofu patties are particularly delicious.…
