In between French films at the Westgarth on the weekend I enjoyed an amazing lunch at Gypsy Hideout. This is a lunch plate that is like a sample plate featuring items from the lunch menu, including stuffed vine leaves, meatballs, a stuffed tomato, baba ghanoush, feta and bread.…

breakfast at the Breakfast Club in Northcote
I’m aware that I’m well behind the times in reviewing the Breakfast Club on St George’s Rd in Northcote, but I ate there for the first time only a couple of weeks ago. The coffee is great and the baked eggs are really very good, with some nice additions like a small salad on the side.…
lunch at the United Arab Eatery on High St, Northcote
I’ve been remiss in writing about food of late, and will make amends with a week of food reviews. I hope you’re feeling hungry. To begin, the United Arab Eatery is a small cafe on High St in Northcote that has opened recently for lunch after trading for dinner for several months.…
brunch at Gypsy Hideout in Northcote
I’ve not been eating out as much this year as I have in previous years, and consequently my list of places to visit has grown long and neglected. Since reading Hookturns‘ ambivalent review of Gypsy Hideout in Northcote, but then hearing very positive comments about it, I’ve wanted to try it for myself, and I did so recently with a friend.…
dinner at Merricote, High St Northcote
Merricote is a smart new contemporary restaurant where the sadly departed Jules bar used to be on the southern Westgarth section of High St Northcote. It opened last week and I was keen to try it with a friend who lives nearby and who has been peeking curiously in the window watching the space being renovated.…
a sweaty stalker
Unfortunately I’m now not the only hyperlocal blogger in Melbourne to have acquired a stalker. Vetti live in Northcote recently received a series of increasingly belligerent comments that suggested that an anonymous coward holds her personally responsible for graffiti in Northcote.…
chocolate mousse at Cocoloco, High St Northcote
Dark and white chocolate mousse with fig liqueur. You know you want it but I got the last one of the evening! Cocoloco on High St Northcote is a fabulous place for a chocolate indulgence, and has been much reviewed, including by Vegan about town, Where’s the beef, Weeny and The tasty dozen.…
dill infused vodka martini at The Estelle, Northcote
A new drink appeared in the menu at The Estelle on High St Northcote recently – a dill infused vodka martini with a slice of cured salmon. When I ordered it the Karen Gillan lookalike waitress raised an eyebrow and said ‘good for you’.…
croque monsieur at Jules bar, High St Northcote
Jules is a newish bar on the south end of High St Northcote in the Westgarth precinct. Vetti live in Northcote published the first review, and I was keen to try it for myself. I enjoyed a glass of a gentle but dry beaujolais (made from gamay, local versions include a good one from Mount Burrumboot Estate in Heathcote and an equally good one from Eldridge Estate from the Mornington Peninsula).…
