naked bike ride

The annual World Naked Bike Ride begins in North Fitzroy and passes through Fitzroy. Watching the reactions the unprepared suburban tourists is almost as much fun as watching the ride itself. It’s on this Sunday 4 March. At 2pm riders begin meeting in Edinburgh Gardens, and they depart before 3pm. So about 3pm, stop what you’re doing and loiter on Brunswick St. Visit asbareasyoudare.com for more information.

persecuted for being sexual

The recent story about the Victorian high school teacher who starred in an internet porn video has already started to fade from the news. The circumstances reminded me strongly of the Lynne Tziolas case a few years ago, where a NSW teacher who discussed her sex life in a women’s magazine and posed for nude photos was summarily dismissed from her job.

The circumstances are very similar. In both cases, the teachers have broken no laws or professional codes of conduct.…

just a blogger

According to Wikipedia, journalism is ‘the practice of investigation and reporting of events, issues and trends to a broad audience in a timely fashion’. The definition describes a behaviour, a process, a method. It matters not who undertakes this behaviour.

The act of engaging in journalism occurs regardless of whether individual journalists are paid to perform journalism or do it on an unpaid voluntary basis. It happens regardless of whether they are employed by corporations or organisations or work for themselves.…

recruitment agencies and their moronic behaviour

One of the reasons I’m pleased to be starting a new job this year is that I will not have to deal with the morons employed by recruitment agencies again for the foreseeable future. Doing short-term contract work is fine but having to negotiate with the leotards in agencies to get to promote yourself to a potential employer is a painful waste of time.

I’m sick of their irrelevant and annoying assumptions about me. First, that I am confused or doing something wrong by applying for jobs that are beneath my potential.…

The City of Yarra publishes a video

The City of Yarra has published its first video on Youtube. It’s about the 2011 community projects undertaken thanks to grants from the council. It’s very well made and I hope it gets seen. I know about it because they sent me an email about it and asked me to link to it or embed it.

It would help if the City of Yarra enabled commenting on Youtube, and also if it embedded the video in the news item about it, rather than just linking to it.…

News Ltd and Fairfax are content kleptomaniacs

Thanks to @HughRundle for pointing me to the quote where media robber baron Murdoch claims that various internet content aggregators act as ‘content kleptomaniacs’. This is ironic when you realise how often News Ltd and Fairfax steal social media content created by citizen journalists. They republish video content without permission, attribution or recognition of creators’ moral rights. In doing so they also breach their own editorial guidelines, which make attribution mandatory.

Below are two screenshots showing how News Ltd and Fairfax stole this video from Youtube, which was created by Ryn Christoph.…
