This 1948 photo show the premises of the Melbourne Auto Wreckers at 71-75 Johnston Street Fitzroy. The address is still a car workshop today. It’s interesting how some industries have remained in Fitzroy’s streets while others have long since moved away.

Considering the danger imposed by narrow streets and drunken idiots, I’m amazed by the fabulous cars I sometimes see parked on the street in Fitzroy. Consider this Porsche 911 T (the base model approx 1967-1973). Utterly gorgeous, sleek, minimalist and iconic. Respect.

On Sunday 19 April I went to Birrarung Marr to see the Ferrari owners’ club concours d’elegance. As a teenager my favourite Ferrari was the Ferrari F40 but, as my taste has matured, my aesthetic preference is now for the Dino Ferrari 246GT. Like my absolute favourite car, the Porsche Carerra GTS (Type 904), it is a small, light mid-engined sports car.

On a recent Sunday I was loitering around the streets of Fitzroy idly taking photos. Below is a mural in Bar Open. The outdoor sites included a well dressed man on the corner of Brunswick St and Johnston St, some fabulous cars and brightly coloured metalwork.

On a recent Friday evening I spotted this 1948 Chevrolet outside the smash repairs on Fitzroy St. I love the art deco design!

I dropped in to Gorker gallery to check out their second exhibition ‘The fine line’ by Nate Holmes Trapnell. I also got to speak to gallery owner Luke about the gallery. I mentioned how much I enjoyed their opening night and he said they were thrilled by the response of the local arts community and the many bloggers who spread the viral marketing campaign about the gallery.

Luke also had the inside information on a mystery that had me perplexed: how did the Off the Kerb gallery on Johnston St get a whole car in their front room?…
