dinner at Barca, High St Armadale

I go to restaurants to eat food. You’d think this is obvious but perhaps it should not be taken for granted. Take restaurants on High St Armadale. Not exactly a place with a great reputation for food. When so many of the customers are anorexic blondes, you know they’re not there for the food. They don’t seem to be there for the atmosphere either. Maybe they’re just filling in time between facials.

But it’s diplomatic to spend some time with friends on their turf as they spend so much time on mine.…

breakfast at Pheast48, Armadale

On a recent Saturday morning I had a delicious breakfast at Pheast48 at 48 Wattletree Rd Armadale. My friend and I shared the French toast with bacon and maple syrup and the eggs Benedict, which had a particularly tangy hollandaise sauce. We sat in the individual church pews you can see in the front window in the photo below. The interior is warm and cosy with art on the ceiling as well as the wall. It’s also on the walls of the large rear courtyard.…

James Bond at Armadale train station

On a recent trip to Armadale I was surprised and amused to find street art on Armadale station that, according to local sources, has been there for some time and not buffed. How intriguing it is to see Bond lurking on the platform. Lyn Kosky and the CEO of Connex should be careful!

dinner at Aya Japanese restaurant, Armadale

After seeing the Miso and Ghostpatrol ‘Nesting and Dying’ exhibition at Metro 5 gallery I went across the road to have dinner at the Aya Japanese Restaurant with my girlfriend. Aya was almost empty when we arrived at 7pm. We were seated at a table for two, read the menu and ordered food and wine (a glass of Mornington Pinot Noir). We shared a tofu salad and croquettes then each had the Kabayaki Unagi, grilled eel glazed with sweet soy sauce on rice served with miso soup and tsukemono (pickles).…

On Wednesday 22 October 2008 I went to the ‘Nesting and Dying’ exhibition and book launch of Melbourne artists Miso (more on her background) and Ghostpatrol at the Metro 5 gallery in Armadale. The exhibition is on until 9 November. You’d more regularly see their work in galleries and on the streets in Melbourne and Fitzroy, and it was curious to see some familiar Fitzroy faces (on the walls and in the crowd) at an unfamiliar location.…

Yesterday I went to see the new David Laity exhibition at Metro 5 Gallery in Armadale. His paintings of women have a pop art consistency across different exhibitions yet they appear fresh each time, and the debate about sex, gender and representation repeats itself each time he exhibits.

Some of his previous work can be seen here. Not knowing what Laity looks like, we played an amusing game of ‘spot the artist’ from among the crowd.…

art is confusing

On Friday night I went to the Metro 5 Gallery on High St Armadale to see Jeff Kennett award two signifcant art prizes to two artists. Unfortunately, I didn’t particularly like anything I saw. That’s the confusing thing about art – it’s so subjective. The wine, however, was quite acceptable.
