The former Frederick Gugenberg men’s fashion shop on the corner of Gertrude and Smith streets closed over a year ago and, in 2012, became the venue for some pop-up shops. It has recently reopened as Karavan, a Mediterranean / middle eastern cafe.

Although many new restaurants have opened in Fitzroy in the past few months, I am not inspired by the American diner trend and there are only so many burgers I want to eat.…

lunch at the Builders Arms bistro on Gertrude St

What can you do to amuse yourself on a rare day off work on a Monday (in this case the day between the weekend and the Melbourne Cup horses running in circles thing? Go somewhere nice for lunch of course, and with limited options for enticing places that open on Mondays, the bistro at the newly refurbished Builders Arms seemed the place to be.

The girlfriend and I started with some of the entrees: whipped cod roe, olive toasts with anchovies and crudité with smoked curd and pomegranate molasses (further below).…

Smart Alex moves to Gertrude St

Like Trippy Taco, Smart Alex hatters has relocated from Smith St to Gertrude St. It’s taken over half of the space of Books for Cooks, which has shrunk into a single street frontage.

Tickets are now on sale for this fundraiser and clothes swap on Sunday 13 May starting 4pm.

Pre-sales tickets online $15; ticket price at the door: $18.

Music begins at 6:00pm with local bands: Sugarpuss, Footy, Ana Nicole, Skyscraper Stan and the Commission Flats, Jane Dust, Harpoons, and DJ Francis Plagne playing between sets.

Ticket includes entry to the clothing swap from 4:00pm, bands after 6:00pm and one raffle.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival runs 20 – 29 July 2012, 6pm – midnight Gertrude St.…

Here are some photos from the Gertrude St Projection Festival opening night last night. The crowds were by far the biggest of any opening night of the festival. By far the most impressive work for me was this framed photo in the second hand shop on the west end of Gertrude St. projected on to it were tears that slowly ran down the man’s cheeks. It was easy to miss but I’m pleased I saw it!…

Gertrude St Projection Festival starts this Friday

The Gertrude Association‘s fourth Projection Festival begins this Friday night with a free opening night event at 7pm at the Workers Club on the corner of Brunswick and Gertrude streets. For the first time The Brotherhood of St Laurence, which has been based in Fitzroy since 1933, will be contributing a projection to the festival. The Brotherhood’s ‘Faces of Fitzroy’ will feature photos of its clients and phrases describing its work. The festival has become a significant arts event in Fitzroy and it’s fantastic to see it each year.…

Economic Industries coming soon to Gertrude St

The word on the street is that the former metal plating premises called Economic Industries on Gertrude St is soon to become the ‘Movida next door’ of Cutler and Co. Hopefully there will be a wide range of wines by the glass, excellent bar food and no dishonest ponytailed waiters.

I found myself at Tandoori Times on Gertrude St with a friend a few weeks ago. I’d eaten there years ago and had not been particularly impressed, but we were in the mood for Indian. I hesitate to publish indifferent or poor reviews because I’d rather focus on more positive recommendations of my favourite places, but on reflection I thought I should publish this after all.

Our meal was not bad, but neither was it good.…

Ladro on Gertrude St is now something of an institution, having seen the creation of a sibling venue southside and the original owners depart to create the comparable Supermaxi in North Fitzroy. I missed the initial rush and hype and so never reviewed it. When I put it on my ‘tell me where to go’ list, I never expected it to win. I think some peeople vote more for what is familiar than what they want to be informed about.…

Claypots has closed

I’m well behind on completing the reviews for my ‘tell me where to go’ polls, but the backlog has been reduced by the unexpected closure of Claypots on Gertrude St, which means that the winner of the February poll will not be reviewed. According to the note in the window, the St Kilda Claypots remains open and the owner is planning to turn the Fitzroy space into a multimedia art something.

In the space of a former convenience shop or fish and chip shop (I can’t remember), Piadina take away on Gertrude St has been open about two weeks. It serves a short menu of breakfast and lunch dishes designed to take away, though there are a few tables inside if you want to eat there. Last Saturday I ordered the lamb piadina. It’s a plump soft flatbread filled with tender lamb strips, grilled slices of eggplant and zucchini and garlicy tzatziki ($8.50).…

The Hi God People will perform at Gertrude Contemporary, 200 Gertrude St Fitzroy tomorrow, Saturday 26 February with performance artist Penelope Trotter as part of Dylan Martorell’s exhibition at the gallery. Fitzroy history – the Champion hotel

The former Champion hotel on the corner of Brunswick St and Gertrude has a colourful past. It seemed to have been a centre of illegal gambling at the turn of the previous century, with arrests being made in 1897 for running a sweep. In 1904 someone broke in and stole a roll of linoleum the landlady had recently bought.

In 1949 a safe was stolen from the hotel and £600 was removed before the empty safe was recovered.…

Fitzroy history – 11 Gertrude St

This 1958 photo shows 11 Gertrude St, when it was occupied by P. Chong, a herbalist. The building of E.J.H. MacFarlane, optician (now the home of Mattt bags) next door at 13 is partially visible on the right. The front door has had a coat of paint but otherwise it looks fundamentally unchanged. It appears to be a private residence.

Fitzroy history – Gertrude St looking east

This is another interesting but ultimately not entirely successful then an now comparison. The view is of Gertrude St facing east from approximately the corner of Gertrude St and Fitzroy St. The buildings to the left and the wall pillars to the right were the only helpful reference points. The comparison again draws attention to the relatively recent trend for street trees. Does anyone with expertise in landscape architecture or urban planning know when the trend started?…

Fitzroy history – 158-164 Gertrude St

This building at 158-164 Gertrude St was constructed in 1887-1888 for a chemist, and is an example of the Queen Anne revival style. It now houses businesses on the ground floor and people above.

Fitzroy history – Glass Terrace on Gertrude St

This 1958 photo shows the Grass Terraces on Gertrude St near the corner of Fitzroy St. Numbers 72-74 were built in 1854-1855 and numbers 64-70 and 76-78 were built in 1856-1857. Apart from a fresh coat of paint they’ve survived almost unchanged.

The frame for this advertising poster on Gertrude St received its graffiti weeks ago when it contained a poster for the Greens during the state election campaign. The dude who replaces the posters must not be responsible for cleaning the frames, and the result is somewhat amusing. The underwear model is a climate fraud. Does this mean his package is not carbon neutral?

Roundhouse Roti on Gertrude St has closed

One of the most unreliable of restaurants, Roundhouse Roti on Gertrude St, has finally closed and the space is being renovated. Over the years it has opened and closed repeatedly at random, and it’s hard to build a customer base when you do that.

This picture shows the view from the corner of Young St and Gertrude St looking west past Brunswick St to Nicholson St and the Exhibition Building in about 1890. I really like photos like this that I find that show the section of Gertrude St lost more recently to the Atherton Gardens public housing estate.

Fitzroy history – 39-49 Brunswick St

I find these historical photos of the pre-tram, pre-car era of Melbourne so enjoyable to look at. This is the corner of Gertrude St and Brunswick St c1866. I had guessed that the little cream coloured section on the first floor of the corner building was a later addition, so it is fascinating to see it was actually an original feature of the building. The National Trust has more information about this row of houses.

Apart from the excellent coffee, which I tried last weekend, the other thing I like about the new cafe De Clieu on Gertrude St is their windows that open to become inside / outside seating.
