dinner at Marmalade and Soul, Queens Parade North Fitzroy

Marmalade and Soul opened at the start of the year in a former scruffy pub in a bit of a backwater location in between but apart from the busy Brunswick St and Queens Parade strips. The food is a mixture of the modern and the retro, and the current offer of 3 courses for $60 is a tempting offer.

I met a friend there for dinner recently and this is what we ate. For entrees, smoked eel with cauliflower and eel jus and ancient grains salad.…

Northside knowledge

If you’re a fan of cycling and the inner north this event on tomorrow is for you. In conjunction with BikeFest 2012, Northside Knowledge 2012 tests punters’ bike-found knowledge of the inner north. It’s on Saturday 17 March. Meet at 2pm at the rotunda, Edinburgh Gardens, North Fitzroy.

In a team of four (bring some friends or pick up on the day) you will be given a sheet of photo-clues, about 60 of em. Each clue is a picture of a place, street art, sculpture or thing within 3km of the starting point.…

naked bike ride

The annual World Naked Bike Ride begins in North Fitzroy and passes through Fitzroy. Watching the reactions the unprepared suburban tourists is almost as much fun as watching the ride itself. It’s on this Sunday 4 March. At 2pm riders begin meeting in Edinburgh Gardens, and they depart before 3pm. So about 3pm, stop what you’re doing and loiter on Brunswick St. Visit asbareasyoudare.com for more information.

dinner at Long Play, St George’s Rd, North Fitzroy

I moved from North Fitzroy and stopped spending time at the former Glitch bar and cinema long before it closed, but I was still sad when I learned that it had closed last year. It’s taken me about a year to get around to eating at its replacement, Long Play, and I was very impressed with my meal and the ambiance of the space. With a friend I shared the trevally ceviche, broad bean salad and semolina gnocchi.…

goodbye Bottegon, hello Richmond Seafood Tavern

The tenure of Bottegon on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in North Fitzroy must have set a record for brevity prior to oblivion. It was there for about two months only – so brief a time that although its domain name was registered they never got round to publishing a website. In a space that is becoming an obvious restaurant black hole, another business is now open there – the Richmond Seafood Tavern – that has relocated from Richmond.…

dumping on the Commonwealth Bank

The Daily Bogan recently reported some incoherent nonsense about the ongoing public toilet issues in Fitzroy and North Fitzroy. After strongly advocating in favour of the new toilet on Victoria St near Brunswick St, including driving a lot of positive resident feedback to the City of Yarra, I was so pleased to see work beginning on the site late last week (below).

dinner at the Tramway hotel, North Fitzroy

The formerly shabby Tramway hotel was one of my haunts years ago, but would not have been there for 5 years. I recently learned it was being renovated and wrote a history post about it while waiting hungrily for the kitchen to open. It now looks rather smart inside; more like a smart cafe / casual restaurant in many ways. It features many de rigueur design tropes you’ll be familiar with – taxidermied animals, vintage industrial accessories, blond wood and Gigibaba style suspended lightglobes.…
