Live music has come and gone, a campaign proclaiming ‘it’s not shit anymore‘ a few years ago didn’t last and it slipped into irrelevance before closing. Now it has reopened after a complete refurbishment featuring a vintage industrial theme based on the industrial heritage of its namesake city.

The interior walls have been stripped back to bare brick and the floors to bare timber, and there’s a pressed tin lined bar with stools and table with chairs and high tables with stools throughout.…

They recently failed to charge and are dead.

NiMH rechargeable batteries are supposed to be capable of dozens, if not hundreds, of recharge cycles, and should have a life of several years. I would have recharged these batteries only about 5 or 6 times. They can be reasonably considered to be faulty and unfit for purpose.…

In reinvigorating the space and changing its use I think it will do well, because there’s been nothing else like in the area since the closure of Roundhouse Roti a few years ago.

I had beef rendang with roti canai and my friend had soy braised pork with rice. The rendang was fantastic but the roti was a little dry, and my friend said her pork was very good.…

The owners are relocating their other business, Rice Queen, from its current location on Smith St to the former St Jude’s space. More recently, St Jude’s was offering a cheap bar meal and seemed to have lost their mojo.

With so much competition around, and some diners being strongly driven by novelty and the desire to try newer places like Hell of the North and Gorski and Jones, it must be hard to transition from ‘new and exciting’ to ‘established local institution’.…

Located in the former Trippy Taco premises on Smith St, Storm in a Teacup is specialty tea cafe (albeit one that does serve coffee) that also makes fantastic cakes, including pear and red velvet.

I enjoyed my earl grey with lemon. The service is friendly and welcoming and the interior is lovely, light and bright with pastel green shelves and bar seats with lightning bolt shaped bases (see bottom photo).…

Smith St is becoming the hub for Thai and nearby cuisines in Melbourne, with the long established Vilom Thai being joined by Mamanee, Easy Tiger and the Thai / Laos Yim Yam.…

Yim Yam has become popular quickly and deservedly so because it has fantastic food at reasonable princes.…

While gentrification is not always a good thing, if it helps remove bad businesses that no one frequents and encourages new entrants to the area then residents will benefit.
