Hyperlocal news about Melbourne's first suburb: Fitzroy 3065

unAustralian

The scene below is Edinburgh Gardens on 27 January, the day after Australia Day. Celebrations that night trashed the garden and left enormous amounts of rubbish to be cleaned up.

The result is perhaps not as bad as after new years eve, when the garden looked like this, but it’s still a mess. In an article published on 25 January, the City of Yarra explained that it would provide many additional bins and rubbish collection services.…

dinner at Horn Please, St George’s Rd, North Fitzroy

A year ago, after having been to London twice in the previous two years, and having noted that the hot food trend there was the revivial of Indian street food in smart upmarket restaurants (similar to the Mexican trend that was already entrenched there and which has now reached saturation point in Melbourne), I wanted to know if anyone was doing the same with Indian food in Melbourne. I didn’t think anyone was, but that has changed with the opening of Horn Please in North Fitzroy recently.…

breakfast at the Breakfast Club in Northcote

I’m aware that I’m well behind the times in reviewing the Breakfast Club on St George’s Rd in Northcote, but I ate there for the first time only a couple of weeks ago. The coffee is great and the baked eggs are really very good, with some nice additions like a small salad on the side. The Phantom foodie, Eat drink stagger and It pleases us all like it too, and it seems to have maintained its reputation over time, which is a significant measure of quality.…

dinner at Long Play, St George’s Rd, North Fitzroy

I moved from North Fitzroy and stopped spending time at the former Glitch bar and cinema long before it closed, but I was still sad when I learned that it had closed last year. It’s taken me about a year to get around to eating at its replacement, Long Play, and I was very impressed with my meal and the ambiance of the space. With a friend I shared the trevally ceviche, broad bean salad and semolina gnocchi.…

Fitzroy history – from hotel to apartments

This 1905 photo shows the impressive Aberdeen hotel on the corner of St George’s Rd and Holden St in North Fitzroy. In 1895 someone broke in and stole whiskey, brandy, schnapps and 2000 cigars! Must have been a posh place. It’s now mostly apartments.
