dinner at Floating Dragon, Lakes Entrance

Floating Dragon in Lakes Entrance is an unusual regional restaurant. As far as I can tell the menu is reasonably authentic Cantonese cuisine. The food is certainly of very good quality and it is relatively expensive, with somewhat slow but very friendly service.

Located on a pontoon floating in the harbour of Lakes Entrance, Floating Dragon has novelty and great views to add to its excellent food. Even on a wet and stormy night it was calm inside, though you could occasionally feel the movement of the water beneath.…

food hygiene in New York City

I’ve been writing about food hygiene for several years now and have attempted to increase transparency for consumers by publishing information about Fitzroy restaurants. Unfortunately local and state governments are corrupt and beholden to commercial ratepayers. They refuse to publish food hygiene inspection data to benefit public health because it may threaten the viability of bad businesses and this has the potential to reduce the rates and taxes they pay to governments.

best meals in New York City

In addition to the meals I have previously written about in my 2013 visit to New York City, these meals are worthy of separate reviews. Apart from one, all were moderately priced places. More often than not, the tiny ramshackle places that have been around for decades served the best food.

hotels in New York City

Our criteria included: about $300 per night, internet included (fast enough for Skype), not too far from a subway station, and with a variety of restaurants in the neighbourhood.

the ATMs of New York City

I’ve been in New York City. It’s a fascinating place, and very strange. I’ve found it far more different and foreign than London. In many ways it seems not like the largest economy in the world and an economic superpower. It’s shabby and there is evidence everywhere that capitalism is broken.

Take these photos of ATMs taken around the main streets of hipster central Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It looks like some dodgy third world country where you cannot trust that your card won’t be skimmed and your account cleaned out.…
