I’ve been listening to several new albums by favourite artists in recent weeks. The Pet Shop Boys’ Elysium is fantastic. Bob Dylan’s Tempest is growing on me. Ian McCulloch’s Pro Patria Mori is an instant pleasure full of his characteristic melodies.
The latter two albums contain homages: Dylan’s song ‘Roll on John’ is about John Lennon, a peer who’s been dead for over 30 years, and McCulloch’s ‘Me and David Bowie’ is about Bowie, an idol and mentor who’s still alive but retired and not much in the public eye.…
It’s been a while since my last southside lunchings post. I’ve been mostly revisiting favourites in the area, but I’ve also tried some other places along Chapel St. Last week I had an excellent chicky chicky parm parm at The Wolf and I. It’s also been positively reviewed by Culinary pleasures.
It had previously been a mediocre pub and had one of the quickest makeovers I’ve ever seen. The chicken fillet was moist and tasty, the crumb crisp and thin and the tomato sauce and ham could all be individually tasted – it wasn’t the usual slab that tastes mainly like oil.…
The local government elections take place on Saturday 27 October 2012. If, like me, you’re deeply cynical about the motives of people who run for election to local government, it can be difficult to find anyone you think is worth voting for. I’ve been thinking about what I want from my local government councillor. I expect them to be transparent about their policies and values.
I want them to be focused on finding pragmatic solutions to local problems.…
I sometimes get emails and comments about why I don’t automatically write about any local issue that appears in the commercial media. The answer is I write mainly to explore my own interests, and while I am interested in many local stories and issues, they are not all worthy of discussion. Not everything that may be considered by someone to be newsworthy is a newsworthy issue to me.
The recent impending auction or sale of the Rose hotel is the most recent such example.…
The recent article Porn hurts women, so say the partners of users annoyed me greatly. Apart from the usual anti-sex, anti-porn rhetoric, what annoyed me the most was the rampant hypocrisy and double standards it espouses.
The author, Petra Bueskens, critiques Bettina Arndt’s 2011 article Porn is not a dirty word, wherein Arndt discusses men’s use of pornography and their confusion about why women appear to dislike this. Porn is a diverse form of media.…
For the curious diner, the Green Shed in Beechworth is an enticing proposition, with a menu offering a fusion of middle eastern and Asian flavours. On my recent trip to Beechworth for the Easter long weekend it was somewhere I booked for so I did not miss out.
Having eaten to excess since Friday night, by Sunday night we were beginning to order more cautiously. We were interested in the ‘feed me’ five course tasting menu, but we asked which dishes from the menu were included and it seemed to focus on the ones we found less desirable.…
I’ve heard good things about the pub in Stanley, a small town about 10 minutes from Beechworth. These opinions are absolutely right – the Stanley pub serves excellent food in a comfortable atmosphere. The girlfriend and I had a booking for Easter Saturday lunch and the pub was full. Despite this, the service was consistently good.
We started lunch with house made bread and chilli chutney in olive oil, which was extremely moreish. The girlfriend wanted a couple of oysters, which were served with a vinegary onion dressing, and pronounced them to be good.…
Did you read my information for media and marketers? No? I didn’t think so. I haven’t received one of these for a while so I hope you can understand why I’m indulging in the absurdity. A shouty free social networking website. How amazeballs. So is the first link in this spam, which links to a static splash page. Only the second link leads to the live site. Why include a link to the splash page?…
