I had lunch recently at Miss Chu on Exhibition St, and it’s mostly good. A couple of other reviews agree that the pho is bland but the rolls are good, so my friend and I ordered accordingly and were pleased with what I got. From the top down: prawn and green mango rolls and their little bottle of chilli sauce; roast duck and banana flower rolls; scallop and prawn dumplings; and pork spring roll salad. The dumplings are exquisite but the salad was not so exciting.…

the best Nasi Lemak in the Melbourne CBD
The nicest thing about working in the CBD for the first time for a few months this year has been the opportunity to eat out for lunch every day. I’ve been enjoying curries at Funky Curry and Sheni’s and, for amusement, set myself a task to find the best nasi lemak (with chicken) in the Melbourne CBD.
Every place you go serves this dish differently, and it’s impossible to say whether there is a definitive version.…
lunch at Hoboken in Hosier Lane
Hoboken is a cute cafe in what was half of bar Misty in Hosier Lane. They have a brief lunch menu of vegan friendly rice and beans, sandwiches and toasties, including this amazing mushroom, spinach and cheese toastie that was exactly what I wanted earlier this week on a rainy day. The coffee is perfect and I like them.

lunch at Hare and Grace on Collins St
Hare and Grace is a new bar/restaurant next door to Espressino on the corner of Collins and King streets. It opened about a month ago but, with this being holiday time for many people, it was unexpectedly quiet when I arrived to meet a colleague for lunch yesterday. This also means it seems I have written the first review of the food. Normally the food bloggers who work in the CBD would have got to this on opening day.…
lunch at Elevenses, Little Collins St
My friends Tom and Shanny used to run Elevenses cafe in Flemington but, as Jeroxie details, the storms in early 2010 caused significant damage to their building and the footpath out the front and their landlord and the council took far too long to fix it. They were forced to shut down, but they’re resourceful and resilient people and have found new premises in the city.
Elevenses at 585 Little Collins is even better than the previous incarnation.…
thrush
I thought the herpes tag in Collingwood was a random act of confusion, but I recently saw more sexual health related graffiti, this time on Little Bourke St in Melbourne.

lunch at £1000 Bend, Little Lonsdale St
£1000 Bend is a great cafe in the city that has a short menu of really good lunches. My new favourite is the saganaki burger with mayonnaise, salad and tomato chutney. Fried cheese is one of humanity’s finest creations. My friend had the chick pea, beetroot and feta salad. I’ve found the service to be good and it’s also received positive reviews from Hookturns, Jeroxie and Tummy rumbles. Did I mention the fried cheese? Sorry vegans.…
I’m talking about the commodification of sex at Pleasure Salon tonight
For much of human history, sex for pleasure has been a rare and precious commodity, and rare things are expensive. Sex for pleasure has been bought, sold, swapped and traded throughout known history.
Despite most sexual behaviour being social, not reproductive, we continue to treat it as rare even though it is, in economic terms, so abundant that it should have no value at all. So why does it retain such value?
The ways in which society enforces and perpetuates the commodification of sex in long term (monogamous) relationships is not well understood, particularly where sex is exchanged in an implicit or unplanned manner.…
lunch at the Chutney Bar, Queen St
I love Indian food and recently found the Chutney Bar at the northern end of Queen St near the Queen Victoria markets. Their goat vindaloo is delicious and comes with rice and roti. It was great value at about $10. No one else seems to have reviewed it, and Google streetview shows a generic cafe at the location, so it may be relatively new. I didn’t get a chance to ask as it’s a busy place and the staff were rushing about, but it is worth trying if you work in the area.…
