This cynical gen x (dressed entirely in black) met a similarly dressed peer and went to the pub, the new Town Hall hotel on Johnston St (formerly Griff’s wine pub and the Purple Turtle before that). I’d enjoyed several dinners at Griff’s, including these in 2008 and 2009, and was sad that it did not survive. But I was equally prepared to enjoy its replacement.

We had a show to go to and wanted a light meal, not an extended fine dining experience in the rear dining room, so we chose to sit in the front bar (which is not much changed from the Griff’s days) and order from the bar menu.…

On Thursday 15 October Griff’s wine pub held as special dinner for regulars and members of Brown Brothers winery’s Epicurian club. Present were several members of Brown Brothers staff and a full house of 30 keen diners and wine lovers seated at two communal tables in the rear dining room at Griffs’s. The conversation ranged from the marketing headache caused by the mistaken attribution of albariño of a grape variety increasingly being grown in Australia (it’s actually savagnin) to the future of the Australian wine industry in the context of climate change.…

Having read Cindy and Michael’s review of Charcoal Lane restaurant on Gertrude St, I was determined to try their selections (spiced yam fritters served with bush tomato chutney and pumpkin gnocchi with sage, macadamia nut butter and saltbush) as soon as possible. Reading the review by That Jess Ho further tempted me, particularly her second review featuring the pumpkin gnocchi with sage again. A recent sunny Sunday provided the opportunity to invite a friend to share a relatively rare meal – a fine dining lunch.…

By the time I posted last week about the half price dinners at pubs like Griff’s and the Builder’s Arms, I had already had a delicious dinner at Griff’s wine pub. Between 6-9pm on Wednesday nights, items on the regular pub menu (not the fine dining back room menu) are half price (excluding the items on the specials list, desserts from the fine dining menu and drinks of course).

My dinner companion had wonderful tender dukkah coated calamari and warm potato salad (below, $9), while I had a piping hot and very tasty kangaroo pie with sensationally buttery sauerkraut (above, $10).…

My friend chose 3 courses for $20 and I chose all 4 for $25. How do they do it? I started with the appetiser of white anchovies with orange zest. What an amazing combination!…

It’s surprising when you search the interwebs for reviews of a particular restaurant, because sometimes you find many and sometimes there’s none. It’s not clear why some places attract hungry bloggers while others seemingly do not. Apart from brief reviews by Where’s the beef and the Lab Goddess, the only people who know about the food at Akari Japanese restaurant on Brunswick St are those who have already dined there. I had dinner at Akari recently for the first time and it was good enough for me to want to let you know about it.…

I’ve been there before but not reviewed it so on a recent visit with a new pescetarian friend I managed to take some photos of dinner (but I missed the sardines before they were devoured, and they are as good as the sardines at De Los Santos).

The Easter long weekend was an extended food orgy for me as I took a visiting relative to some of the best restaurants in Fitzroy. I’ve already written about my adoration of The Commoner, and I finally got to try their regular Sunday roast. In honour of the occasion it was rabbit with prunes and bacon, and it was wonderful. Like my review of Good Friday dinner at St Jude’s Cellars, I’m going to tempt you first with dessert: beignets dipped in cinnamon sugar with caramalised apple and cream.…

I enjoyed a wonderful dinner on Easter Friday with a visiting relative at St Jude’s Cellars. I’m not a Christian, but the restaurant was offering fish specials for the occasion and this represented a chance to try some different dishes. But I’m going to skip straight to talking about dessert: panna cotta with peaches, a mound of crushed gingernut biscuit and jasmine. Sensational, simple and sensual.

I return now to regular scheduling. First, I tried one of the house specialties: smoked eel, eel pâté and beetroot relish with rye crispbread (below).…

The last time I ate at Red Rice on Brunswick St I was without my camera, so when the opportunity came to eat there again, and I made sure I was better prepared. You can see where they get their name from. Red Rice does excellent food at reasonable prices in a pleasant and quiet space where I feel very comfortable. It’s the perfect place if you want to eat and talk rather than eat and watch other people because it is too noisy to hear yourself.…

After enjoying a wonderful calamari salad at the Standard hotel recently, I joined a large group of friends celebrating a birthday a few days later at the Rainbow hotel, and again ordered the calamari salad. Compared to the more conventional combination of sweet and citrus at the Standard, this dish was more challenging: calamari, caramelised figs, radicchio and lemon. The calamari was equally well cooked as at the Standard and the flavour was astonishing: the rich sweet honey from the fig, the bitterness from the radicchio and the tangy lemon all worked with the calamari to create a fabulous dish.…

I’ve reviewed dinner at the Standard hotel before, and their pub food favourites are always good quality. After ordering and eating their delicious calamari salad, which contained the most tender calamari I’ve ever had (traditional Greek restaurants excluded), I am even more impressed. The salad contained lots of calamari, orange slivers and coriander and the combination of sweet, citrus tang and dressing was outstanding. This dish blurs the lines between pub and restaurant quality food, and as the food at Fitzroy pubs continues to improve, it’s easy to eat a fabulous meal like this in a casual atmosphere for under $20.…

Rice Queen is a new informal restaurant (self described as an Asian diner) on the floor below the Panama Dining Room on Smith St. I dropped in to have a look and liked the sound of the menu so much I ate that evening, rather than waiting to dine with friends as had been my intention. Rice Queen is promising and the food is good, but it needs to make some improvements.

I had dinner at De Los Santos, a Spanish restaurant on Brunswick St that receives mostly positive reviews, for the first time in about two years recently, and it was as good as I remembered. Last time was to entertain visiting friends from Sydney; this time was solo before going next door to listen to the Andrea Keller quartet at the Uptown jazz cafe.

Mon Ami is a 16 seat brasserie on the corner of Nicholson St and Moor St on the western edge of Fitzroy. It has a traditional French menu and it specialises in duck. I have been meaning to eat there for a long time, and was treated to a special dinner there last Friday night when my girlfriend made a booking and told me she was taking me out for a surprise dinner. As we began walking in the right direction to go to Mon Ami I became convinced that it was our destination, and I was so pleased when I realised for certain!…

Beginning today and continuing for several weeks, I am going to trial posting twice a day. Since the start of 2008 I have been posting daily, whereas previously I was posting on average 3-4 articles a week. I have such a backlog of content that it may lose its value if it is delayed further.

St Jude’s Cellars on Brunswick St has been open for some time now and I have finally eaten there. I’ve been interested in whether the restaurant would work, as previous cafes in the same building have not worked.…

The former Ume Nomiya space on Gertrude St became Añada at the start of the year, it filled immediately with customers, and some vigorous discussion erupted in the comments of the Tomato blog about their food. After two failed short notice attempts to get in I thought I’d let some time pass for Añada to fix any early problems before I tried it, which I did recently with some visiting Perth friends.

Añada has received mostly positive reviews and I agree with the Age, Tomato and Sookylala that its food is fantastic.…

Griff’s wine pub has been open for some time now and each time I walk past and read the menu through the window I vow to make a booking. I’ve finally done so and can report that Griff’s is a fantastic addition to the Fitzroy dining scene. The fine dining room is separate from the front bar and bistro area, where casual meals are served. The interior is warm and dark with a fine restoration emphasising its Victorian origins (there are no traces of the former Purple Turtle thankfully).…

Living in Fitzroy is mostly a pleasure and a privilege. It’s easy to live without a car (though my motorbike is convenient as well as a hobby, and zipping to nearby places in congested traffic like the Corner Hotel or the East Brunswick Club is easy) as you can walk or get a tram, and there are many affordable places to eat.

One of the unique charms of Fitzroy restaurants is Houndstooth, which is a cosy bistro on Johnston St with incredibly cheap meals that are amazing value for money because they are so much better than they should be for the price.…

After much anticipation from the Fitzroy and Melbourne beer drinking communities the Little Creatures Dining Hall finally opened on Thursday 3 July 2008 on Brunswick St. I went to try it the next night, and according to staff, they have been overwhelmed by the response. I was informed that on opening night they served over 250 meals and they expected to do as many again on the Friday night when I was there. With that kind of performance they should be profitable sooner than they expected.…

Ink seafood restaurant (single page site only, no menus Update 24 July 2008 – Ink now have a beautiful looking website with menus) is located on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Rae St in the southern border of North Fitzroy. Alexandra Parade divides Fitzroy and North Fitzroy and is not the greatest location for a restaurant – several lanes of constant traffic, no other entertainment venues on the same block and little passing foot traffic compared to Brunswick St or St George’s Rd.…

A few days ago I finally ate at Red Rice, a Vietnamese restaurant with a modern twist on Brunswick St. I’m glad I did – the meal was sensational – and I feel bad that it had taken me so long to try it, because I had accidently denied myself their wonderful food!

The signature dish is the bright red rice (unfortunately I did not have my camera with me), which is achieved with the use of annatto seeds.…

There was much consernation amongst my friends with the demise of the orignal Builders Arms back room, complete with soggy carpet and disco ball. Daggy dancing is being pushed aside for yuppie dining in many inner city premises. It’s taken me some time to try the new fine dining room, but I finally made a booking last Friday night.

The interior is all retro futuristic late 1960s 2001 A Space Odyssey combined with large prints of punk chickens.…

Last week I ate at the Cocoro Japanese Pottery Cafe on Smith St for the first time and it was fantastic. Firstly, my friend and I had the Gobo (Burdock) Salad, which is a root vegetable grated with a savory dressing that includes chilli.

Next we received the Atlantic Salmon Sashimi, which was slightly seared on one side. Delicious.

The potato salad was the best looking dish (thought the Gobo does look amazing). It contains cucumber and is presented like icecream.…

This may not be my most coherent post. On Wednesday night I went to the regularly monthly wine tasting at Federation Square. Afterwards, my girlfriend and I were starving and in need of serious nourishment. Fortunately, we managed to secure a table at Blue Chillies on Brunswick St. I’ve eaten there several times before but it has been a while since my last visit. We started with the chicken drumlets and the crab spring roll, which were both delicious.…

I’ve been planning to eat at The Commoner since it opened and last week I finally got there with my hungry girlfriend. We wanted to eat!

I ate at Scarpetta on Brunswick St recently and I have been meaning to write about it, but got distracted until now. It was a relatively quiet mid-week evening, it was cold, we wanted to eat somewhere nearby, somewhere good, and somewhere we hadn’t been to before. When you walk past Scarpetta it looks so cosy and inviting inside. Reading the menu while standing on the footpath is easy; walking away after reading it is impossible.…

I week ago or so I ate with a good friend at Peko Peko Japanese restaurant on Smith St. The menu is sweetly divided into ‘small’, ‘medium’ and ‘large’ food. The dishes are delicious and I love the cosy atmosphere. Peko Peko has also been positively blogged about here. Below is what I enjoyed – firstly Miso soup, then beef and eggplant with rice. Not every place on Smith St is worth eating at – Peko Peko is in contrast a guaranteed pleasure.…

Mario’s has a fabulous reputation and makes equally wonderful coffee. Some other websites talk of the attitude of staff, but I have always found it honest, direct and low key. No fake obsequiousness or asking if I am enjoying my meal. If you want water, ask for it and you’ll get it. Compared to the attitude at Babka, where expecting to be treated like a paying customer is an insult to the precious poppets who prance around with their noses in the air, which makes it difficult to see the hungry customers waiting, waiting, waiting, the level of service at Mario’s is impeccable.…
