tell me where to go – lunch at the Rainbow hotel

The winner of the May 2011 ‘tell me where to go’ poll was the relatively newly renovated Rainbow hotel on Young St, and it won by 1 vote in the closest poll of the series to date. The Rainbow received 32 (out of 141) votes, with the Spanish Club on Johnston St just behind on 31 votes and the Korean restaurant Goshen on Smith St on 30 votes.

A quick read of the menu made me salivate for the wagyu burger with smoked cheddar cheese and onion relish, and it is superb – fat, juicy and with fantastic chips.…

dinner at the Town Hall hotel on Johnston St

This cynical gen x (dressed entirely in black) met a similarly dressed peer and went to the pub, the new Town Hall hotel on Johnston St (formerly Griff’s wine pub and the Purple Turtle before that). I’d enjoyed several dinners at Griff’s, including these in 2008 and 2009, and was sad that it did not survive. But I was equally prepared to enjoy its replacement.

We had a show to go to and wanted a light meal, not an extended fine dining experience in the rear dining room, so we chose to sit in the front bar (which is not much changed from the Griff’s days) and order from the bar menu.…

tell me where to go – dinner at the Worker’s Club

The September ‘tell me where to go’ winner, with 42 of the 160 votes, is the Workers Club on the corner of Brunswick St and Gertrude St. I visited on a Thursday night with a friend and we enjoyed an excellent meal. My friend loved her salmon and noodle salad and I was very satisfied with my goulash with nokedli and sour cream.

$10 Tuesday night dinner at Grumpy’s Green on Smith St

With vegetarian friends visiting from interstate and coming with me to the Last Tuesday Society show at Yah Yah’s on 30 June, I needed to find somewhere convenient for dinner. On their last visit we sampled Trippy Taco, Peko Peko and several other places, so this time it seemed appropriate to visit the newest vegetarian eatery in the area – Grumpy’s Green on Smith St a few doors up from Yah Yah’s.

dinner at the Union Club hotel

While out and about in the south end of Fitzroy last week I had a great dinner at the Union Club hotel: snapper with harissa potatoes and a cauliflower, chick pea and preserved lemon salad. I used to go there quite a lot and it was as cosy and welcoming as I remembered it to be. In a recent conversation some friends suggested that the quality of the food had declined, but I did not find this to be true based on the meal I had.…

calamari salad at the Rainbow hotel

After enjoying a wonderful calamari salad at the Standard hotel recently, I joined a large group of friends celebrating a birthday a few days later at the Rainbow hotel, and again ordered the calamari salad. Compared to the more conventional combination of sweet and citrus at the Standard, this dish was more challenging: calamari, caramelised figs, radicchio and lemon. The calamari was equally well cooked as at the Standard and the flavour was astonishing: the rich sweet honey from the fig, the bitterness from the radicchio and the tangy lemon all worked with the calamari to create a fabulous dish.…

calamari salad at the Standard hotel

I’ve reviewed dinner at the Standard hotel before, and their pub food favourites are always good quality. After ordering and eating their delicious calamari salad, which contained the most tender calamari I’ve ever had (traditional Greek restaurants excluded), I am even more impressed. The salad contained lots of calamari, orange slivers and coriander and the combination of sweet, citrus tang and dressing was outstanding. This dish blurs the lines between pub and restaurant quality food, and as the food at Fitzroy pubs continues to improve, it’s easy to eat a fabulous meal like this in a casual atmosphere for under $20.…

Fitzroy history – dinner at the Rochester Castle hotel

This undated photo shows the Rochester Castle hotel on the corner Johnston and George Streets in the late nineteenth century. Unlike many other nineteenth century pubs in Fitzroy, which have been demolished or made into private housing, the Rochester Castle is still a functioning and popular pub.

$5 pizza at the new Royal Derby Hotel

During 2008 the Royal Derby Hotel on the corner of Brunswick St and Alexandra Parade has been closed for a complete makeover. It opened on 25 October (I was away and unable to attend the opening party) and I went in a few days later to see the interior and to sample the $5 pizzas.

My first impression of the pizza is that it is good with potential to improve. Like Bimbos, the pizzas are not large but are of a good quality.…
