This album is cinematic in style – it seems to drift. A collection of beautiful moments, instrumental, distant, layered and mysterious. If there is a grand narrative, I couldn’t tell, but it matters not. The perfect music to refocus with – and actually listen to. I remain pleasantly haunted by it…and yes, slightly in love with it. Naming your band after a Victorian era mourning fabric? Delicious AND atmospheric… Here Their Dreams is brought to us by Gersey posse member Matt Davis (look out for other Gersey side projects Sirens of Venice and The Tall Buildings). Last night I took Joffa to Thornbury Theatre to see Darren Hanlon. Beautiful songs, in a very luxe environment. If you haven’t been yet, imagine a reception centre with decor and plasterwork by Franco Cozzo’s slighly more minimalist cousin…Anyhoo, great show, nice buzz, and this track in the encore. Yes, I sang along and loved it. which of course is a cover of Happy Birthday Joffa, and thanks Darren, Monnone Alone and Shelley Short for a great show! Camerahead or photoborg, I wondered to myself…Is it a comment on the increased surveillance in our cities, the push to document all experiences phographically, or the constant quest for the perfect picture? A homage to The Buggles I am a Camera, or the 1950s play and film of the same name? If you know why these are appearing around town, do leave me a comment. This one is on High Street, Northcote, I’ve also seen one on a billboard near the Clifton Hill Tram Terminus…? Filed under: cinerama, clifton hill, hi-fi, love your work, northcote
Hooray for chilly weather – perfect for a booth, share plates and a warming beverage or two. Last night found me fireside at Bar Nancy. I enjoyed my Islay Fog and a mulled wine or two, while my companions were very pleased with hot toddies and hot buttered rum. The roasted nuts, meatballs, arancini, saganaki, pastizzis and cheese plate were also fabulous. The salon booths are dimly lit, cosy, and adjacent to some fabby metallic naked lady wallpaper – what else could you possibly want? Find Bar Nancy in Westgarth Village, at 61 High Street. Cassandra Lucas and Bridget Keane AKA Pod 4/5 have installed Plastic Web at the Northcote Uniting Church. What will it trap over time? When I visited on Sunday, it contained raindrops, and a few green leaves. I’ll be back over the next few days to see how time and weather affect it. Plastic Web can be found at 251 High Street, Northcote, until July 5. See more of Pod 4/5′s work here. Filed under: love your work, northcote
Illustrators Australia are a Northcote based collective – run by and for the benefit of illustrators. They currently have 118 A3 size giclee prints on show at the Northcote Town Hall. Buy any print that takes your fancy for just $120! If getting there by 4pm today is impossible, check out the prints at the IA website… Sadly I have no more wall space – if I did, I’d be picking up works by Natalie Brockett, Travis Price, Paula Fletcher, Nicole Onslow, Michel Canetti, and Stuart McLachlan. I’ve been hearing that Thomas Mann has made not one, but two appearances on High Street this month, courtesy of P.F. Danado. Today I set out to find him. Here he is outside the Aquarium Cafe / Title …I couldn’t spot #2, perhaps some no-good has removed him? Filed under: letter-riffic, love your work, northcote

This pleasure seeker is having a sumptuous few days… Whisky tasting, the Seasonal Pleasures Pear Dinner at Provenance, good friends, and great times. Vic Market this morning, and a pot of sweetcorn chowder bubbling on the stove this afternoon. Tomorrow will see me back in the kitchen, where I’ll be making spicy red coleslaw and a batch of caramelised onions, perfect sides for scotch fillet steak (and more friends to dinner). I also hope to get to celebratory drinks with Cindy and Michael, who have posted 1000+ times at where’s the beef… Filed under: dee-lites, fitzroy, love your work, northcote, ring-a-ding-ding-recipes ...
I spotted these on my way home this afternoon. If you’re waiting for the lights to change on Westgarth St, it’s nice to have something to read… Where else but Northcote? Filed under: letter-riffic, love your work, northcote
This afternoon I met the lovely Sarah aka embolalia. Sharp-eyed readers will have seen her work around town, and may recall my sadness at finding unread rain damaged stickers in Northcote. Anyhoo, she was perfectly charming and gave me a pile of freshly printed glossy goodness, as you can see here… Big thank you bouquets going out to embolalia! If you haven’t already, find her on Facebook or at her wordpress blog. I am reliably informed that her new stickers are weather resistant, which makes me very happy… Filed under: dee-lites, letter-riffic, love your work, northcote ...
Who do I run into this afternoon, but Harold Robbins! The man who brought us The Carpetbaggers is now doing his best to add a little spice to Northcote. The actual dymo pasteup is the work of P.F. Danado…check out his blogpost about it here! Filed under: letter-riffic, love your work, northcote
Today’s morning coffee was single origin fair trade organic from Honduras. I continue to be impressed by Trevor and Steve’s approach to coffee. If you’re in Northcote and need a little caffeination, do drop in. A medium-ish roast, with hints of sweet/caramel/toasted grain peeking through. Starts quite bold, but there’s nothing wrong with that…Available by the glass or as take-home beans. Filed under: love your work, northcote, shop-o-matic
A fabulous Northcote theatrical experience was had last nite – watching Evaporating Sun Productions Distant Bodies. If you’re in any way interested in relationships, communication (or lack thereof), and contemporary black comedy, this is definitely worth catching. Five people, a desert setting, adult themes, and a plot that will definitely make you laugh. What more could you possibly want? Written by Barnaby Chiverton, with soundscapes by Claire Deak. On at Northcote Town Hall until May 8. Filed under: love your work, northcote

Four Larks Theatre are a group of Australian and American artistes, who perform in unusual locations. Expect to see a combination of installation, live music, circus, and vaudeville! I’m going to see The Fate of Franklin and His Gallant Crew on March 25, in a secret northside location, and am most excited. Imagine yourself a fly on the wall in 1850s London. Commander Franklin’s naval expedition is missing, somewhere in the Arctic. Lady Franklin is desperate to keep searching for him, and involves Charles Dickens, a fine teller of tales… Visit their exquisite website, you can also become a fan on Facebook, ...
