four larks theatre in northcote!

Four Larks Theatre are a group of Australian and American artistes, who perform in unusual locations. Expect to see a combination of installation, live music, circus, and vaudeville! I’m going to see The Fate of Franklin and His Gallant Crew on March 25, in a secret northside location, and am most excited. Imagine yourself a fly on the wall in 1850s London. Commander Franklin’s naval expedition is missing, somewhere in the Arctic. Lady Franklin is desperate to keep searching for him, and involves Charles Dickens, a fine teller of tales… Visit their exquisite website, you can also become a fan on Facebook, ...

suggestion box

I’ve been walking past a suggestion box in High St, Westgarth for a long time now, and was curious about who put it there. Thankfully, Off The Kerb have solved the mystery for me… The boxes were installed in various locations by Nick Ilton. His intent was to encourage people to stop and contemplate, and, judging by the brief lifespan of his previous public art pieces (anyone remember the square bicycle in the racks at the State Library?), he did not expect them to last very long. Suprisingly, the boxes are still in place, and Nick received many suggestions. These were ...

engrish du jour

Spotted in the temple of tackiness (aka Northcote Plaza) this afternoon. I ventured in seeking kitschy decorations for our Australia Day Eve party, but found this instead. And, no, I didn’t buy it… Posted in love your work, northcote, shop-o-matic

The Serve visits Northcote this week. Thanks to the lovely Dani Valent, who invited me to contribute! I’m the Indulge section in the blue box at right…in the Sunday Age, M magazine, page 15, today. Click on the article for a closer look! Posted in buzz-o-matic, love your work, northcote

Check out this late 60s gem! Chris Waxman (aka Klaus Wunderlich) has combined his unique Hammond style with Phase 4 Stereo. This LP claims to break the sonic barrier, and ORGAN-ize your mind. How could I not buy it? Could say many things about the album title and sweet cover art, but I’ll leave that to you. More treasure from the crazy records pile at Retro Active. street fighter’s last revenge

Last night’s cinerama was all about kung fu fighting, 70s style. Double crossing, deadly assassins, and a sexpot who wants it all. Also included are a funky soundtrack, vampire fangs, and a cunning Mexican strongman. Sonny Chiba stars as hardass mercenary Takuma “Terry” Tsurugi, there’s loads of sex, violence, and general wackiness. It’s camp, loaded with bad polyester, and lots of fun. If you like your martial arts with a touch of James Bond, do take a look! Out on Madman’s Eastern Eye. I picked it up as part of the Sonny Chiba Collection Volume 1 (with The Bullet Train, and ...

another party with victor silvester

I grew up around lots of folks who love to roll back the loungeroom carpet, talc the floorboards and do a little quickstep. This also means I have a great affection for Victor Silvester and his Ballroom Orchestra. Whether you waltz, samba, or foxtrot, this LP is a treat. Found in the $5 crazy records pile at Retro Active today. I don’t know where the cover pic was taken, but I’m betting you can’t buy those balloons any more… Posted in hi-fi, love your work, northcote, shop-o-matic

i heart the estelle

Always nice to see places I love getting some press! Joffa et moi celebrated our anniversary at The Estelle last night, with a beautiful beetroot salad, barramundi plate, and sliced beef with capers. Our Italian wine was delicious, the pannacotta sublime, and the Tasmanian sticky very moreish. Fabulous folks looking after us too. So far, have sampled lunch and dinner here – will be back for breakfast shortly! As seen in the Northcote Leader, December 16, 2009. Sad that the Northcote Bowl’s lanes are now tables, but at least they are still surrounded by happy Northside types. I had no ...

the man from hong kong

Last night’s cinerama patrons were treated to an Ozploitation classic. Without exaggeration, The Man From Hong Kong is a supercharged action adventure, 70s style. Burning cars, martial arts, bad fashion and hang-gliding make this film a must see! George Lazenby and Wang Yu star in this roller coaster of a show. Look out for stuntman Grant Page and his ripped pants, George Lazenby on fire (no stunt double!), Frank Thring, and Rebecca Gilling in the buff… Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith, you’ll see make-out action, crude ocker humour (aka racism), Valiant Charger carnage and superbad crimelords…Listen for Jigsaw’s hit Skyhigh! Thrill ...

the estelle

I walked inside yesterday, and loved everything. A beautiful fitout in black, white and grey (with touches of pale pink), atomic spindly legged chairs, gorgeous tiled walls, vintage vinyl on the decks…Glass light fittings from grandma’s house circa 1950s, with plastic floral arrangements, barware and pictures to suit. Sadly I arrived around 3, so had missed breakfast service. However, my chickpea, pumpkin and broadbean salad was divine, team Estelle were totally lovely, and I will definitely be back. They now have a liquor license, so I’m hoping trading hours will extend past breakfast and lunch… Have your own Estelle experience! Stroll ...

luchador shiraz 2007

The labels says “Luchador function: noun. Usage: Spanish word. 1) fighter 2) wrestler 3) a wine that will body slam your tongue. Inferno loves crab cocktail, tangerines, and Baked Alaska. His favourite scent is Heiress. Prefers Roumier to Rousseau.” This South Australian wine is a spicy, smooth drop that tastes of dark purple fruit. A big, classic, Barossa shiraz from Chris Ringland at R Wines. The sort of wine made for a matador. Soft to finish, with hints of oak and chocolate. You’ll wonder at how quickly it disappears. The label is designed by Morning Breath (go to samples and select ...

urban donkey bicycle exhibition

If you’ve ever despaired that generic bike style (the lycra, the colours, the horror) is all pervasive, this is your ideal gallery show. The irrepressible Matt B has built a roomful of one-off bikes, each with it’s own style and personality. All his creations are made from found or donated parts, and would be ideal for your next festival appearance, photo shoot, film or display. I was lucky enough to meet him yesterday, and found his energy and enthusiasm most infectious. Matt’s bikes are on display (alongside paintings by Johnny K) at Synergy Gallery, until November 29. Stroll by, and ...
