Archives for “music”

Melbourne's The Basics (featuring Aria Award winner Gotye) will record their first ever live album at The Northcote Social Club on Friday February 5.

top gigs of 2009

1 Pure Scenius – Brian Eno, Karl Hyde and the Necks at the Sydney Opera House Brian Eno was the best gig I saw this year – a fascinating and thrilling performance, with the additional status of being a rare and longheld ambition fulfilled. 2 David Byrne at Hamer hall This was the third time I have seen David Byrne, and perhaps the best, as the show was focused on the music he wrote with Talking Heads that was produced by Eno and on their new collaborative album. 3 Jarvis Cocker at the Forum theatre A joyous, fun, energetic and jaunty gig from Jarvis, ... ...

Despite the somewhat noticeable omission of successful EP track Call On Me, Red Riders delivered an enjoyable and exciting evening of tunes to the Melbourne audience....

The Cassette Kids’ national tour is a promising vision of what’s to come and is one that fans and keen musos alike shouldn’t miss

‘High Vibes’ Festival

Record attendances and some stunning spring sunshine helped the Northcote “High Vibes” music and arts festival celebrate its ninth and most successful year. A diverse crowd of over 110,000 people enjoyed a full day of music performances, food and street theatre. Hair salons, book and clothing stores were all transformed into makeshift music venues to help accommodate an impressive program that featured almost 100 local and international acts. Sarah Bradshaw, whose store ‘The Book Grocer’ became a popular late-night drinking spot, said the festival was highly significant to the area and meant a lot to local businesses. “The festival is wonderful,” said ...

Vocal harmonies at 303

Zeena dragged me reluctantly along to an evening at Bar 303 on Northcote High Street. “Harmony on High” they called it.. and if i’d known what it was called i wouldn’t have gone because i have a strong repulsion for all the shops that call themselves whatever “on High”. How very prejudiced and resistant of me. Because this was a beautiful gig. Zeena’s friend Matt is in a band called Vocal Agents. They started the night with some lovely and innovative harmonies. Some of the arrangements were better than others. The crowd loved their version of Mad World, but i ...

Extraordinary moments. For the Melbourne hall of fame 2009, i would nominate the Flying Scribble percussion artist gray taylor for her one-armed drumming set at the Wesley Anne, sunday 28th June. Not only did she valiantly play with her left arm out of action, she played one song blindfolded. Go gray! You are a star and a legend. We love you. Oh and Louise was good too. You both rock. PS Ooh look here’s Lou and gray again playing at Anytime Place in July, filmed by the Qua on his mobile phone. Video is lame.. get closer man, but it sounds good. This was a ...

On the night of Friday 28 August I attended The Lucksmiths farewell tour show at the Thornbury theatre. They played two sets to huge applause, appreciation, hugs and tears. I saw them play a great show at the Northcote Social Club earlier this year before their recent retirement announcement, which came as a shock. I have so many wonderful memories of their music and live shows. Scribble-folk fly again

How much delight can a melbourne music goer bear? On a night when the rest of the world was huddled around the s/MCG watching everyone from Kylie to Wolfmother and Split Enz, Annie and i headed for Northcote’s Wesley Anne to see the ethereally magnificent Flying Scribble with Pikelet playing solo. Louise and gray are in very fine form; their new magic shines wonderfully just like the old numbers. gray’s drumming always astonishes and Louisie somehow manages to play 15 instruments at once, pumping out eg bass, organ, accordion and macbook samples. Yes i was transported again by their beautiful rhythmic genius. Here they ...

For those of you who like a chop and a lick and a flying v salute… Metal Mayhem for years has stocked a reasonably good range of headbangers’ delights on vinyl and CD, and has also been one of the mainstay ticket outlets for Heavy Metal gigs in Melbourne.  In a surprise move, literally as well as figuratively, Metal Mayhem has now left the city squall and descended upon the – hopefully – droves of Metal minions in Northcote on High Street.  Realistically, we deduce that high rents has kicked the Metal store out of the city limits and out to ...

Moments later, the young girl by now carried to the relative safety of nearby shrubbery by her friends, a skinhead in a red hoodie approached the same bench at speed, leapt over it performing a somersault, mistimed his landing and careered into a row of parked bicycles. Half an hour later he was back pretending to be a dog and giving someone's black labrador the time of his life. Welcome to Northcote's High Vibes festival.

hi vibes completely mental, fun

What a beautiful day. i am completely blessed .. as the wonderful Louise invited me to a delightful brekkie in the wilds of westgarth, only moments from the action. Yes this is the first year i’ve been an off-world visitor to planet northcote during the high vibes festival. i was feeling a bit sad, but being rescued with French Toast and Fruit Salad is such a good way to build up your spirits and get ready for a day of pleasure. as i arrive, gray is tapping away on Renato’s drum kit, in time with Bessie Smith. Life is deliriously gorgeous. The sun is ...

Emma Tonkin plays the northcote feast

This Saturday night looks fantastic on the Northcote High Street. Emma Tonkin is playing the Uniting Church .. but not alone; she has a choir behind her to really stretch the beauty of her songs. (Have a listen here, or visit her space.) Competing with “Girl, interpreted” which is a celebration of Auslan song interpretation. Oh, why are they on at the same time. Boo. mm, delightful Angie Hart

Sat 8 Dec – Angie Hart, Skipping Girl Vinegar i know barely anything about Angie Hart’s music, so i could enjoy this without expectation. The band is really something .. she has Cam Butler and Dan Luscombe both on guitars, keyboard etc. I don’t know who the drummer and bass player were, but as an ensemble they created a warm and vibrant soundscape for Angie to shine on vocals. She doesn’t dance or perform really, just sticks to singing the songs in a simple and engaging style. A lovely evening. Related posts:Spheres at Evelyn .. last gig for jon murphy i think this was ...

Sat 27 Oct – Mountains In The Sky, Qua, Flying Scribble Lou and gray were utterly astounding, although they won’t admit it. This was a pearler of a night, with Flying Scribble, Qua and the Mountains In The Sky. Gray’s (FS) Drums stood out as really superlative, with inventive and original rhythms. They couldn’t see the crowd, because of the lights, but the crowd totally appreciated them. There were many cries for more. Qua and MitS hit the straps with the crowd, but hey FS just booted their wicked beats into the stratosphere. i’m glad i saw this gig. What a joy. Drums and versus ...

Martin Martini rouses an empty space ..

The other week, i saw Martin Martini and the Bone Palace Orchestra playing the outdoor stage for the new northcote town hall/ outdoor space. Aah magic, brilliant musicians on stage, and about twenty people in the audience. i don’t know who was in charge of publicity, but it was so far from the time this mob played Open Studio at the ‘06 High Vibes festival (around the corner). That day there were people dancing up the walls. it was funny, because i could hear them from my backyard, but i was having one of those “i’m not going out” days. finally i ...

in between days at the Spanish Film Festival

Last week at the Spanish Film Festival I saw Life in 65 Minutes (Tu vida en 65′ – official site). It’s a story about a group of young men who read in the paper that a man they went to school with had died, and so they go to the funeral. However, this is a case of mistaken identity, as the man who died was not their former school friend. The man who died had committed suicide, leaving a devastated family, including his sister. One of the guys in the group fall for her immediately, with complicated consequences. The film is ...

music on the hill

Thank you Sasha and Paul for your great DJ story!! and Sam for sharing your funky videos. the musical highlight for me would have to be the night of farewell for housemate Louise and gray. It was their party really, and they did some amazing setup, including candles down the alleyway, and a genuine earth-mapped pinyata, with roaming dinosaurs hanging off the hills hoist. Lu made her room into a band room, with drum kit, amplifiers and all sorts of electronic connections to complement the Farfisa organ. She was so thrilled when people brought their instruments to play (but not so ...

spoonbill gets the crowd dancing

Sat 24 Mar – Spoonbill, miso i’ve never seen the Spoonbill before so i wasn’t ready for the mix of visuals (2 vj’s), funny theatricals, and broad australian samples from TV, movies and radio. But i loved it .. Opening with two unfolding puppet spoonbill dancers, the deep throbbing tones of ‘Low and Easy’ grabbed our attention straight from the start. The dancing was energetic and hilarious, and the Social Club has very good bass on their speakers, the low kind that send chunky vibrations through your legs. Their last song was hard and thumping, like chemical brothers meets wolfmother, as the solo guitarist ...
