Four Larks Theatre are a group of Australian and American artistes, who perform in unusual locations. Expect to see a combination of installation, live music, circus, and vaudeville! I’m going to see The Fate of Franklin and His Gallant Crew on March 25, in a secret northside location, and am most excited. Imagine yourself a fly on the wall in 1850s London. Commander Franklin’s naval expedition is missing, somewhere in the Arctic. Lady Franklin is desperate to keep searching for him, and involves Charles Dickens, a fine teller of tales… Visit their exquisite website, you can also become a fan on Facebook, ...

I’ve been walking past a suggestion box in High St, Westgarth for a long time now, and was curious about who put it there. Thankfully, Off The Kerb have solved the mystery for me… The boxes were installed in various locations by Nick Ilton. His intent was to encourage people to stop and contemplate, and, judging by the brief lifespan of his previous public art pieces (anyone remember the square bicycle in the racks at the State Library?), he did not expect them to last very long. Suprisingly, the boxes are still in place, and Nick received many suggestions. These were ...

Michael and I spent Saturday afternoon at the Applecore Backyard Festival with some friends. The relaxed atmosphere and discovery of some great unfamiliar bands were obvious highlights, but we were also pretty chuffed that we avoided sunburn entirely thanks to some huge, cheap Big W hats. Even so, we were a little drained as evening fell and in need of some sustenance before heading home. We'd spent the day grazing on vege sausages-in-bread and BBQ shapes and had very different ideas about what we needed to eat next. While Michael and Mike originally suggested pizza, Toby was keen on Coco ...
According to their website, the Peacock Inn;"was built in 1854 by Horace and Edwin Bastings. The following year they sold it to the 21-year-old George Plant. Plant was to become synonymous with the Peacock, holding the license until his death in 1895. His widow, Catherine then took over the hotel license until 1910."Welcome to Northcote. Trains, trams and maybe a bus.Cool. But Northcote has changed since then.My mother tells the story of discussing Jane Austen in an English Literature tutorial at university. A young male student opined that Austen was clearly bourgeois rubbish, and believed he could smite ...

High St, Northcote. One of a series of works by Thoughtcrime in the area, or has the attribution been added seperately, thus suggesting an unauthorised appropriation? On Monday I turned 37. Last night found me in the beer garden, surrounded by pals, laughter and love. Good times! Karen gave me this gorgeous Depths of the Never Never necklace and Di made me this fabulous feather neckpiece! Thank you to everyone who dropped in, sent texts, bought me a drink, and gave me so many hugs and beautiful presents last nite, I love you all! Spotted in the temple of tackiness (aka Northcote Plaza) this afternoon. I ventured in seeking kitschy decorations for our Australia Day Eve party, but found this instead. And, no, I didn’t buy it… Posted in love your work, northcote, shop-o-matic

On a recent visit to Northcote for lunch with a friend we looked in the window of The Estelle, but decided on lunch at Palomino across the road. A few days later, I found myself entertaining another friend in the same area, and this time I could not resist trying somewhere new. Dinner has already been admirably reviewed by Vetti live in Northcote, and breakfast by Juliette’s food spot, but I hope I have done the first lunch review! The striking tiled walls use a pink / white / grey / black colour scheme familiar to me from art deco era ...

Need to slow down after a busy year? Check out these liner notes… “In this age of great scientific achievement, noisy cities, fast cars, rockets to the moon, computers, speed and more speed we all long for some brief respite every now and then from the frantic pace of life. What better means of getting such relief than through the tranquility of Hawaiian music.” Fresh from Melbourne 1966 – and the crazy records pile at Retro Active. Swing by and ask Tony and Wendy about kitsch vinyl, as well as 70s pop, jazz, and blues LP’s. Posted in hi-fi, northcote, shop-o-matic ...

Check out this late 60s gem! Chris Waxman (aka Klaus Wunderlich) has combined his unique Hammond style with Phase 4 Stereo. This LP claims to break the sonic barrier, and ORGAN-ize your mind. How could I not buy it? Could say many things about the album title and sweet cover art, but I’ll leave that to you. More treasure from the crazy records pile at Retro Active.
