It's a warm, humid Thursday night and we're walking down to the nearest pizza place on High Street to home. And the nearest pizza place happens to be Pizza Farro. Pizza Farro prides itself on making pizza bases from spelt. Well, you might ask; "what the %$# is spelt and why should I care? Is it some sort of hippie rubbish from the mountains of Tibet, only eaten by goatherds and unlucky goats?"Alternatively, in a more polite universe, you might have wondered more discreetly... " What is this thing, this spelt? What does it spell? ...

Yesterday was the first day of the month. The first day of a new season. It was also the first day of four weeks Financial Services Tier 2 training for my new role. I chose to make it my first day using the c25k app too. When I woke, instead of my normal coffee and downtime online, I plugged in the iPhone and set off to a playlist I had programmed the night before – starting with Tina Turner’s The Acid Queen, from the soundtrack to Tommy. I over-extended myself to the tune of Dead Kennedys Holiday In Cambodia, just ...
I know, I know... It's a been a bloody long time since the last post. This week, however, we've got two kidlets in new schools and time to burn. Ecce homo, ergo elk, it's lots of time for cooking and for eating. Let's start with quail.... Mmmmmmmmm......
I’ve been wanting to go to Pearl Oyster since Steph blogged about it, so was happy to visit for breakfast today with Cindy, Michael, Toby and Kristy. I’ve ridden through that odd little pocket of Thornbury loads of times before, heading to High Street Thornbury or further on to Preston, and have noticed it gentrifying over the years. Funnily enough I’ve always thought that area was actually Coburg East, it’s that close to mine (10 minutes by bike, crossing Merri Creek). Pearl Oyster is a really cute and welcoming place, especially for vegans, as the menu caters to them really ...
1 Pure Scenius – Brian Eno, Karl Hyde and the Necks at the Sydney Opera House Brian Eno was the best gig I saw this year – a fascinating and thrilling performance, with the additional status of being a rare and longheld ambition fulfilled. 2 David Byrne at Hamer hall This was the third time I have seen David Byrne, and perhaps the best, as the show was focused on the music he wrote with Talking Heads that was produced by Eno and on their new collaborative album. 3 Jarvis Cocker at the Forum theatre A joyous, fun, energetic and jaunty gig from Jarvis, ... ...
Tart’n'Round has been open for a few months now, and the local veg blogging mafia has visited, eaten and reviewed – see what Cindy and Michael, Kristy, Carla, Miss T, Johanna and Steph thought about the Thornbury cafe. I’ve heard very mixed reviews. I think it’s pretty universally agreed that their sweet treats are amazing (I salivate at the thought of their cherry bomb balls), but their meals and savouries don’t seem to be hitting the mark just yet. I went to Tart’N'Round back when it first opened, and had a fairly bland soup of the day (cauliflower, from memory). My ...
On my recent request for breakfast recommendations, wanting kneading suggested Pearl Oyster, in Thornbury.Located on the corner of Miller Street and Gilbert Road in Thornbury, it is quite near to some of our friends, so when they suggested a Friday morning breakfast, it seemed the perfect opportunity to try it out! Wanting Kneading implied it was difficult to get to by tram, but actually it is no problem - catch the 112 up and there is a stop right outside.Like many of the cafes around Melbourne, Pearl Oyster has that quirky miscellaneous feel - spoons and plates that look like ...
Enni cafe on High St Thornbury is famous for its cakes, but I’ve previously only had breakfast there (which was excellent). I was recently able to overcome this oversight and drooled in anticipation of consuming this passionfruit meringue tart, while my friend loved her cheesecake. Everything is made on premises, and the coffee is good too. A few weeks back Pip tipped me off about a new vegetarian cafe in Thonbury, and today I went to investigate. I had no idea what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised to find a really cute and laid-back place. First up, the coffee is exceptional. That’s important. And it’s priced fairly – $3 for black, $3.50 for white, and no surcharge for soy. Latte of joy... There is also a range of yummy sounding teas, served in a cute mismatching op-shopped teapots. The menu is really small and when I asked about vegan options the guy in the (teeny) ...
The northern suburbs of our lovely city are known for the eclectic mix of people it attracts. It’s not unusual to see a scrangly looking, dreadlocked hippy sipping a latte merely meters from a group of elderly greek gentlemen enjoying their daily espresso. After living here for just under 2 years, I’ve sampled some of the best (and worst) coffees on offer in the Northcote/Thornbury area and I thought my huge amount of idle holiday time would be a good time to start writing about it. I work at a cafe on High st, and while I won’t name which ...
This gorgeous cafe opened a week ago (aprox), and is well worth a visit. Brilliant coffee from St. Ali beans, friendly service, cakeforks, sweet vintage china, good breakfast and lunch options…Coffee is clearly the focus here, which makes moi very happy. Find them at 923 High Street, Thornbury. For those who came in late, El Joyero used to be a jewellers, and can be found near the strange High Street-Plenty Road intersection. Look out for records, books, and other things for sale within…and check their myspace for gigs and film nites. I’ll certainly be back for breakfast or lunch or something very ...
We haven't eaten out in quite a few weeks. We've talked about it, but middle child has a whooping kind of cough, and although vaccinated against just such a situation, our GP tells us not to be surprised. "It's OK", he says. "It just a mild variation from the standard", implying it's the medical equivalent of one of the more dull Bach cantatas. Oh.. that's alright then. She's only got one of the four diseases she's not supposed to be able to get, but I'll accept that this might be ok....So, as I'm not keen ...
Today I went to Thornbury Village. Didn’t find what I’d gone for, but there was sunshine and this so I was happy anyway. Posted in letter-riffic, thornbury
If your kids are anything like mine, they could get lost for hours in a sea of glitter, paint and coloring pencils. Well it's all fun and games 'till it's time to clean up the mess. Having got a camera for me birfday I was out and about again, and noted this prize specimen in High Street: It sits above one of those shops of such awe-inspiring nondescriptitude that are so abundant at the un-improved end of High Street. And thank clapton that it is so, or else there’d be no scruffy [...]
No seriously. Look at that thing. Just look at it. There is rice bubbles in the caramelly part. Clare and I shared this, after brunch at Trippy Taco, there was not much more we could fit in. The food reminded me A LOT (especially the ice cream) of the desserts that used to be a Vegetarian Orgasm (remember that place), turns out it IS the same guy (Andrew is his name). I always wondered where he went! I didnt like the ice cream, it has the weird fake 'whipped topping' taste (that was dominant in a lot of the wares ...

Pearl Oyster is a cafe in either Preston, Thornbury or Northcote - depending on whether you ask the White Pages, Urbanspoon or Threethousand.com.au. Wherever it is, it's one of the recent breed of suburban hipster Nanna's-kitchen-chic brunch-crowd cafes that are sprouting up all over the northern suburbs - think along the lines of Mixed Business, Red Door Cafe, APTE and Palomino. We decided to
In the suburb of Thornbury, Northcote’s smaller and not as ‘hip’ neighbour, you find the gem of the northern suburbs – The Northern Soul (843 High street, Tram 86 stop 41). In an area where many cafes and shops spring to life just to see themselves dying shortly after their grand opening, the British owners have succeeded to build a flourishing establishment with a vast customer base by providing great food and excellent coffee (Toby’s estate), all to a decent price. The modern interior and their iconic little owl in the window lures you in, the food keeps you coming back ...
This nifty new (open 11 weeks) cafe sits alongside a fabulous bicycle sales and repair emporium. Think friendly host, dark wooden furniture, repro vintage bike posters, bulbous sugar bowls – getting the picture? Coffee beans by Social Roasting Company, bread and pastries by Dench, AND the bacon and egg roll comes with house made red wine caramelised onions. I like! Check them out if you’re in Thornbury. Menu and cake cabinet both look good – I’ll certainly be back! Find ‘em at 562 High Street. Posted in shop-o-matic, thornbury
Kristy made this great post about going to dinner at Tart N Round on Friday night, and I read it on Saturday afternoon, thinking about how fantastic it would be to eat that lasagna. So this afternoon, in need of some delicious food and some cheering up, D and I ventured across town to High Street. This was a bit of an adventure, as before we'd left, we'd agreed that it was '269 or 263 or something' in Thornbury, and off we went without confirming the address! This was a big mistake, that saw us venturing as far North as ...
So, we don't really know what there is around Brunswick(ish) that's any good for vegans looking for takeout or delivery! Any recommendations? I am especially interested in recommendations for Thai food, but anything delicious (and definitely has vegan options) would be good. Help me, internets!

On the night of Friday 28 August I attended The Lucksmiths farewell tour show at the Thornbury theatre. They played two sets to huge applause, appreciation, hugs and tears. I saw them play a great show at the Northcote Social Club earlier this year before their recent retirement announcement, which came as a shock. I have so many wonderful memories of their music and live shows. So yesterday I twittered and facebooked that Kimba was eating a vegetarian pig’s ear and it got a big response. The response mostly being, WTF?! For those who don’t have dogs, smoked pig’s ears are a chewy, tasty canine treat. They look like, well, a pig’s ear – replete with hair. Gross, though not as gross as pig’s snouts, take it from me. You can see a picture at Love my pet and Dogs bones. (And if you feed your dog pig’s ears, you should be aware that they have a really high fat content and are really, really bad ...
