At this gustatory symposium, for both the tongue tied and practised, secrets of the tongue will be shared. Hosted by Mother Tongue with Experts of the Tongue – who will loosen tongues to shake out the subtle flavours and textures of their knowledge – join fellow tongue fanciers for tongue exercises, poems in (m)other tongues, tongue cooked and consumed, and tongue tales – stories, recipes, facts and fictions.
A project of Berni M Janssen with Gunther Wilhelm. The tongue-atorium is a research centre dedicated to all things tongue. Here, you will find facts and fictions from the worlds of science, taste, sound, language, visual and culinary arts. Ranging from the grotesque to the erotic, your tongue will be tantalised, tested, loosened and set wagging. Artists, cooks, family and friends from across the world have contributed to this accumulation of physical, metaphorical and ambiguous tongue. Visitors are invited to bring a story, recipe, image, sound or poem to add to the collection.

Round the corner from us, less than a hundred paces away, is a florist, a little convenience store and what used to be a traditional fish and chip shop. The chippie closed down a while ago, and not surprisingly either: we were never able to find it open for business. In the same spot opened Ebi, a Japanese fish and chippery as it calls itself. Time and time again we meant to try it, and in the past few weeks we've managed to become almost regulars. In the bleak midwinter, Ebi is a little oasis of red light. At lunchtime or in ...
I don't care what anyone says - America's national food has got to be the hot dog. The Tribune recently reported that between Memorial Day and Labor Day alone (the American summer), 300 million Americans consume 7 billion hot dogs. 7 BILLION! While hot dogs for Australians mean those awful, pallid things encased in violent pink skin that is wont to split unappetisingly, American hot dogs are actually more like sausages, albeit heavily processed ones. Many brands are available that do not have any fillers or byproducts. Kosher brands are particularly well regarded.Byron's in Wrigleyville, Chicago, serve dogs by the ...
Sheeesh the August market was a rather chilly affair. There was a bit of rain and a lot of cold wind.Luckily, there were lots of lovely handknitted winter woolies on offer. We had a great weekend discovering new talent, eating the most amazing Portugese tarts, and drinking 'Cruising Cuppas' coffee. Two weeks later, and the sun is starting to peek through the clouds. Happy days ahead.Us Melbourne folk are patiently awaiting some warmth....Its been a cold winter. In the maentime....have a peek at what was available to buy at the August market. The next market is on Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of September. We ...
Core members of Speak Percussion, Matthias Schack-Arnott and Eugene Ughetti, are experienced in playing in a host of orchestral, improvisational and new music ensembles and forging new artistic collaborations. Speak Percussion’s new duo work Driftwood presents two 5 octave marimbas deconstructed and strewn throughout a performance/installation space. The work re-contextualises the marimba and explores it as a sonic, cultural and historical artefact. Robbie Avenaim is the founder of Australia’s largest showcase of local and international experimental music, the What Is Music Festival. Avenaim combines traditional and extended techniques with the physical modification of drums and is a composer and percussive improviser. ...

I have just come back from a weekend in Rhode Island, Baltimore, and NYC, in which I think I have eaten nothing but meat, cheese, and white flour. Vietnamese Buddhist vegetarian cuisine could not be a better counterpoint to my "street meat" weekend! Thank you so much to Deb from Bear Head Soup for coming to my rescue again while I am overseas and sending in another Footscray review for your enjoyment.I’ve walked past Bo De Trai several times and have often wondered about what a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant might be like. There isn’t always a lot of people in there ...

Harrell Fletcher is an American Artist whose work is renowned for focusing on local people, and tomorrow he is focusing on us! He will be following the working day of our staff and our ArtLife Participants, sleuthing out all our funny bones for his latest project – The sound we make together (Melbourne). His work will go on display at the Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria, opening Saturday 11 September.
I cannot believe that I have blogged about Hung Vuong in Footscray. With so many choices along Hopkins Street, this has been our preference lately. Maybe because it has heating in winter and air-condition in summer unless many of the older establishments. And also maybe because it has nice white light and better for taking photos! I made my usual order of beef special combination. It is basically pho served with beef slices, beef sausage that is heavily laced with black pepper, tendons and thinly sliced tripes. The broth is quite heavily scented and flavoured with clove. MSG? Of course! But ...
When I was 19, I stayed in a small village outside Rome for a month with a friend. It was the ancestral home of her family. Her aunt lived in the old part of the town, in the small, winding streets that ascended to an old fort. It was an idyllic summer. I remember one time, after drinking too much strawberry-flavoured sparkling wine (we were teenagers, after all), we went in search of "hangover food." All we could find was pizza, but not the flabby, cheesy, mystery-meat kind that our throbbing heads craved - thin-crust, single-topping, perfect Roman-style pizza. A ...
It's a pity they didn't mention the blog title or address, however!! Big thanks to Deb from Bear Head Soup who emailed this to me out of the blue while I am overseas! You are a sweetie. I do highly recommend Mei Ling's 'Vietnam on a Plate' tour (see here for my experience earlier this year). I was on the waiting list from the previous year and the Council faithfully got in touch, so don't despair if they are already booked out. Bring a spare stomach - you end up eating so much food!In other very exciting news, particularly if ...

1. Team Performances At the half way mark of the season the junior section had an incredible 13 of its 19 eligible teams sitting in the top four! Good luck for the run home everyone. Hopefully plenty of FHC kids playing finals hockey this year. 2. More Victorian Representatives! Congratulations to Olivia Colasurdo and Libby Birch who have been selected in the recently announced Vic U13 girls team. Marianne Fridell (nee Weston), known as “Fridell” will celebrate her 500th game this weekend Round 14, 12.30pm Sunday 1st August at Footscray. A teacher at Footscray High School introduced Marianne to hockey when she was in Year 12. Marianne enjoyed the sport so much that when she left school in 1966 she joined the local club, Footscray Hockey Club. Her playing career at Footscray marked the 500th senior game in round 14, made up of 400 senior women’s matches and 100 winter veterans matches.
