Koorie women nurtured children and families with resistance, resilience and strength through suffering and loss to create something new. Government rations of flour, sugar and tea took on significance as core food sources to supplement the survival of Koorie people through the mission days. Set within the “bushhhhh” – see, feel and smell flour, sugar, tea and remember a place, not that long ago, where survival meant making do with what you had. Flour, sugar and tea remain with Koories today, in memories, stories and recipes.

The weekend could have gone either way. It started with me getting up at 5.00 a.m. to study, just as Mr Baklover was getting home from a big one. Nothing says "I love you" like a big, snoring lump on Saturday morning, while the kids clamour for pancakes and the paper sits accusingly in its plastic wrap, unread. Rather than become bitter, I decided to meet Dad for yum cha. This had the unintended and wonderful effect of raising Mr B from his slumber, and we headed for Gold Leaf Sunshine.Get here early if you want a parking spot. To ...

Places and times of transition are imbued with a sense of trepidation and magic. In literature, misty marshes and bogs often provide the setting for mysterious events, betwixt as they are between land and water. The blurry light of dusk and dawn are portentous times where possibilities abound. Clear-cut notions are safe and reassuring, like primary colours. Meanwhile, a haze of ambiguity hovers around the margins of times, places, and ideas. Some find this uncertainty ominous and unsettling, while others find it electrifying. So much of what we eat is neatly packaged, both literally and metaphorically. The divorce of plastic-wrapped supermarket ...

Like two peas in a pod. Still my fav's. Both these cafes know how to run a business! And although they would not like to be grouped together I have put them in the same review because although they are quite different as cafes they both still have a lot in common. That's no coincidence! Ian and Claire who run The corner shop once used to be part owners of Le Chien! Eighteen months ago Ian and Claire struck out on their own once again and have made a huge success of it, whilst ...

Café Lalibela seems to be the "starter restaurant" for Ethiopian cuisine. The conversation usually goes something like this:Person A: "Have you tried Awash/African Town/Harambe/Abesha/Dinknesh Lucy?"Person B: "No, but I've been to Lalibela." I'm not sure what it is. It's probably the most appealing to middle class sensibilities, I guess, with nice decor and less of a cafeteria feel than some of the other Ethiopian restaurants. But hey, who am I to judge - I popped my Ethio cherry there. My friends and I went a long time ago and did enjoy it, but we all migrated to African Town ...

Going back to Seddon Deadly sins is always a pleasure. Although it is not perfect it has many fabulous qualities. Probably one of the most important is their service administered by their consistent, experienced staff! A treasure and a rare find in any cafe! They know about follow up service which is more than most cafes! I'm very excited about Baked Eggs at the moment and tend to order them any chance I get. So I gave SDS's a go. And the verdict? Quite nice, however the menu said Parmesan cheese but I didn't taste any Parmesan, which is disappointing. ...
I saw an ad in a parenting publication a while ago that still irritates me to this day. It was an ad for a prepackaged cake mix, cookie dough, or something of the sort. The image was of a mother beatifically gazing upon her child drawing a picture, and the tag line was something like "Saves you time so you can do more important things in life". When I saw it, mother-guilt - that old companion - flared up. Am I a bad mother, I thought, because I make my own stock, bake my own bread and (shock) make my ...

We’d like to thank everyone who came down and help to make the day fabulous, and if you’d like to revisit the moment, or hear it for the first time, you can listen to the Podcast here. 774 Goes West Podcast ...
Maddern Square. High noon. The battle of the banh mi is about to take place. In the red corner, we have Nhu Lan, the people's favourite. Look at him, resplendent in an orange and white cape and leotard! The crowd goes wild as he flexes his sticky chicken thighs. His buns are so crispy! A hush descends over the crowd - the challenger has arrived. Ba Le is a fearsome opponent, his chest emblazoned with a silver Eiffel Tower. Will Nhu Lan be pounded into pâté? Will barrel-chested Ba Le be brought down by Nhu Lan's bi? Or will this ...
