Even good restaurants make mistake. Only good restaurants know how to deal with mistakes. Il Bacaro is a good restaurant. The two rare steaks ordered at our table came out, at best, medium. They were sent back of course, and we were offered something to tide us over while the rest of our table enjoyed their mains. Then, when the replacement steaks (perfectly cooked this time) were served, they also came with replacements for the sides we had ordered. It was a nice touch, particularly as the spinach was so delicious, and enough to help us forget the original mistake.
Dragon Boat Palace149 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (map)9639 0888Two Saturdays ago Miss L, Miss B and Miss T came along to hear me sing in a concert - afterwards, they suggested an impromptu Yum Cha Posse for the following afternoon, prior to F&H's engagement drinks. It had been AGES since the last YCP! We settled for John So's Dragon Boat Palace, and M and H also joined us.We yummed up a whole lot of dumplings to start with, including har gow (prawn dumplings - my brother Buster's absolute favourite yum cha dish) and prawn and vegetable. My absolute favourite yum cha ...

Carlton Hotel: 193 Bourke St, Melbourne; 03 9663 3216Cookie: 1st Floor, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne; 03 9663 7660If you're after eating venues in the city that deliver flare with a capital 'wow', the Carlton Hotel on Bourke St and Cookie on Swanston St are two of your best bets.Back in the day, the Carlton was a seedy drinking hole (Sydneysiders, think Century Tavern, but scarier;
Funky warehouse art gallery available for young visual artists/sculptors wanting to exhibit in a fantastic space which also hosts functions to enable the work to be seen by many more people. Great space for cocktail parties, conferences, seminars, dance, and performance with grand piano, wonderful acoustics and inhouse catering.
The best thing about crusing around the city on my pushbike is that it is easy to explore streets and dead-ends that you don't normally get to in the car.I found this factory or warehouse beside a railway line in North Melbourne. The use of the contrasting colours in the layers of bricks drew my attention but I really liked the way the bricks interlock on the corners.See my prints and t-shirts at www.redbubble.com/people/dct66 and tees and other giftware at www.zazzle.com/davidt66*.

Since 2003, men’s salon hair care label American Crew has been holding a competition called ‘Face Off’. It is fused with an art exhibition in order to discover which creative salons and stylists are producing original and artistic hairstyles for men. Each style from creative types across Australia is photographed and displayed in black and white and is set to be judged by US American Crew. Their recent event was held at the Peninsula venue space in the Docklands with 700 industry guests, including Arthur and Mimi Galan (of AG) and Nick Smith from GQ magazine, attending and judging for themselves. ...
***Getting through the backlog***StarbucksShop 8Midtown Plaza194 Swanston StMelbourne VIC 3000Gingerbread frappucino, half coffee base, half cream baseCold frappucinos (or frappucini?) on hot days always remind me of holidays in Malaysia. Aah, memories. It was hot on 26th of October, and I had an hour between work and meeting some lovely bloggers for dinner.Me: A small decaf gingerbread frappucino please.Starbucks girl: No worries… well it won’t really be decaf, we’ll do half coffee base, half cream base, ok?Me: …blank look… Sure.Oh man it was good! Loved the gingerbread flavour, not too sweet and super refreshing.And for someone who ...

Big Harvest is a favourite of mine in Carlton, but seeing as it's in Carlton it was a weekend only option - until now. Little Big Harvest is a 'branch office' operating out of a hole in the wall in Causeway Place. If you like a organic, feral, homegrown, health food vibe with your lunch but you've got more than a dollar - move on from Crossways and head round the corner.For $9.50 I have the Chicken Mezze Lunchbox, (you can also have the Falafel version which is equally delicious). Inside your box you get a few tandoori drumsticks, a ...
So, I think my love of Mag Nation is well documented. It’s an awesome place, and my most reliable spot in the city to get slammin’ soy lattes. Those people really know their soy coffees. And, not so surprisingly, their magazines. Last Thursday I was invited to the launch party of their third floor. It was strictly a name-on-the-door affair. I remember when that used to happen to me at nightclubs and VIP rooms. Now, it’s store openings. Well, whatever. I take my brushes with importance where I can get them. The third floor The Third Floor is beautiful – white, light-filled and ...
Auction Rooms103-107 Errol Street, North Melbourne (map)9326 7749Open 7 days for breakfast and lunch, PLUS NOW Thursday to Saturday for dinnerDisclaimer: the lawyer in me feels compelled once again in the interests of full disclosure to state that Andrew Kelly, one of the proprietors of Auction Rooms, is a friend of mine. But like I said last time, this fact does not unduly influence my opinion as to the awesomeness of Auction Rooms!I've revisited Auction Rooms several times in the last few months, and continue to love it as much as I did the first time.I'm writing about it again ...
From its dignified bluestone pavement to its antiquated nineteenth century buildings, Bank Pl is perhaps Melbourne’s most handsome laneway. In fact, it’s so impressive, so beautiful, that’d you be forgiven for thinking you’ve just rounded the corner into Europe. There’s the lamp posts – standing in a neat row, forged from elegant iron and entwined with peeling gold laurels – the beautiful Charter House – its title engraved carefully above the majestic building’s entrance – and plenty of places to sit underneath whispering plane trees as you watch the business crowd pour in for after-work drinks. Undoubtedly, Bank Pl’s most spectacular feature ...

I have not posted in a while as I have been frantic with the show at Melbourne Town Hall. I have been so busy in fact that I feel as though the last few weeks have passed in a frenzy of blurred colours, late nights, pouring rain and loud music.In line with this, below are some random pictures from the past few weeks.(Click on images to expand)Strange, the things you think of... The above picture makes me think of the delicious taste of whisky and apple, which I was introduced to on this evening by a Ukrainian traveller.Champagne, sweat, tinsel ...
Crêperie Le Triskel32 Hardware Lane, Melbourne (map)0466 406404Open breakfast and lunch Tuesday to Saturday (AND now also open on Fridays for wine and cheese degustation evenings from 6pm!)T'was Mellie from Tummy Rumbles who put me on to Le Triskel. Allow me to list ten reasons why I love this place:1) The sign on the front window says "Crêperie Le Triskel: Arrogantly French".2) Despite promises of arrogance on the front window, the proprietor Michael is completely delightful and charmant and not at all arrogant. He also speaks to me in French and did me the honour of pretending to mistake me ...
Portello Rosso is like a caricature of a Melbourne restaurant. It's down a gloomy cobblestone lane way off Little Bourke Street. Once you enter it's all warm timber, leather, open kitchen, wines and general Med-Iberian vibe. It's actually a pizza and ham bar and it's quite nice on a rainy day.Lots of small tapas options and a range of pizza. I had the Crombie which was a good sized smoked bacon, potato, cheese, rosemary, Spanish onion on a tomato base and a proper thin crust. Yum.$15. Good wine list as well if that's your thing.15 Warbuton lane.

Local blogs tummy rumbles and Melbourne Gastronome recommend plenty of tasty and affordable meals around the city, but most of them are closed to the weekender like me. Not so Concorde Crepes (reviewed by Mellie here). This stand, located on the Elizabeth St side of GPO, was open and poised to crank 'em out at lunch time on Sunday.At first glance the menu's got quite the variety of meat going on, but there are actually plenty of vegetarian options too: vegemite and Jarlsberg cheese; tomato, basil and mozzarella; egg, cheese and parsley; even one with chilli beans! ...
On the strength of a hot tip from Jean Michel Jarre who loves all things French (including Vietnam) I sampled the Pork Roll at N Lee Bakery in Little Collins Street. The baguette was fresh (baked on premises), crusty and light in the way Vietnamese do so well. The Vietnamese salad inside was full of the crunch of coriander, cucumber, carrot and radish and set off well against the richness of the pork.And the best bit - $5.62 Little Collins Street (cnr McGraths Lane, opp Pony)
The Carlton Hotel now does lunch on Fridays. This is especially good for summer as they have an excellent deck that opens out from the bar area on Level 1. The menu had some big stuff and then a lot of the smaller sized plates for sharing (or just eating if you're me). I tried the Cheesy Poofs and the Cevapchchi. Cheesy Poofs were OK but more of a snack than lunch. The Cevap's on the other hand were pretty good value for for $12. Three moist, chewy, tasty logs of Slavic porkiness with some dipping sauce to accompany. Not ...
