Hollywood Fashion Shapes Launch

A radiant Sophie Monk was flown in for the Melbourne launch of the new Hollywood Fashion Shapes and Body collection held at the waterside venue Sketch at the Docklands. She had come from, appropriately, Lala-land where she was filming a new reality show called ‘Bigger than Paris’. The starlet wore a blousey, black mini-dress in sheer stripes. While looking relaxed and showing off her lovely pins, and we all love a little black here in Melbourne, I thought that the kitten-ish tan number she sported at the Sydney launch showed us what the range could really do. The new shapewear ...

Sporrans of optimism

The Malthouse Theatre launched its first 2009 season last night, with a bunch of kilted bagpipers doing the full skirl. The pipers cued enough mysterious references to Scotland for a conference on Macbeth, but nary an explanation passed the tight lips of Michael Kantor (or his henchmen or women). However, there's a hint in Robin Usher's Age preview today that these vague allusions might have had

Sportsgirl’s Summer ‘08 Launch

The team at Sportsgirl certainly know how to make a photographer work for a shot. Their recent (and very exclusive) sneak peek preview of their upcoming summer range was an all-dancing spectacular of colour and movement. The models cum dancers on the signature coloured stripe catwalk were interspersed with performers from a variety of genres; breakers, ballroom, modern, jazz – even a fan dancer shimmied on stage. ‘So you think you can Dance’ finalists Jack Chambers and Kate Wormald stole the evening as stars of the show and showed great energy and chemistry when dancing together. This resulted in standing ovations ...

Keren Seelander ~ New Paintings

Artist: Keren Seelander Content: Painting Price Range: most works from $7,050 to $11,300 Exhibition: Flinders Lane Gallery - 137 Flinders Lane Melbourne Dates: October 21 - November 8 2008 This is an exhibition of twelve vibrant mixed media paintings that employ texture, form, colour and composition to create abstract images that speak of light and atmosphere. The intense colour and texture of each piece is resolved by areas of scratchy drawing which in my opinion is key to the work’s success. For myself the strength of the show is September Sunlight in which the warm ochre of the background is broken up by areas of ...

Ladies who lunch: Cumulus Inc

Several weeks ago, Lisa and I headed to Cumulus Inc for lunch. I am quite behind with posts so I won't tell you exactly how many weeks ago! We arrived around 12.15pm, and while it was already packed by this time, we managed to snag two seats at the bar. Lisa and I are not very tall, and I often have comfort issues with high stools, but these felt fine and we were okay perched on the stools during our meal. On one wall of the restaurant are shoe lasts that double as coat hooks. I wonder ...

Auction Rooms, North Melbourne

What do you get when you mix retired warehouse style auction rooms, an old fashioned coffee roaster, and tasty morsels of black pudding all 3 kms from the CBD? What you get, my friends, is a delightful weekend breakfast spot: Auction Rooms 103-107 Errol Street, North Melbourne. This weekend's adventure took us to the historically working class suburb of North Melbourne where large factories and warehouses mingle with old Victorian style terrace houses and the gentrification of the main shopping strips is nearly complete. On our way to meet our breakfast companions, Kylie* and Azza* we drove past French patisseries, ...

Melbourne Dining Scene Update

As there has been a lack of posts lately I thought I'd pipe up with a little something. Our main contributor has been MIA, hopefully not for too long!As an update on the Melbourne Dining Scene, I've had the privilege of eating at a number of various places mostly great - no pictures but quick updates!- Bistro Guillaume: I’ve been lucky enough to visit this place twice since it’s opening, and both times definitely been impressed. There is a definite opulence with the surroundings, juxtaposed against a mainly simple (read Traditional) French menu. Highlights include; scallops with the cauliflower veloute, ...

Patti Smith played a fantastic concert at Hamer Hall on Saturday 11 October. I was expecting mostly songs from her recent covers album Twelve, but she only did a few of those. Most of the setlist featured her best known songs played with vigour and much relevance to current events. The best songs for me were ‘Are you experienced’ (Hendrix), ‘Dancin’ Barefoot’ and ‘Horses’. I was disappointed not to hear her version of ‘Gimme shelter’ (The Rolling Stones). There are some excellent gig photos here and a review in the Australian newspaper. All of the songs were great, and I also ...

Sette Bello

Cnr Hardware Lane and Lt Bourke St, Melbourne; 03 9670 7070I wasn't as quick off the mark with Sette Bello as with Baba: a couple of other bloggers have had their pastries in a twist since the city cafe opened in May this year. In the depth of winter, I recommended Bello on the strength of those reviews to a friend from 'oop north', who was in need of a restorative Melbourne breakfast after

Three little Kittens have lost their Wittens Traumatised by her husband's disappearance, Kitten's frantic reaction is shared by three actors creating the physical and vocal sensation of a person experiencing the upswing of bi-polar depression. Determined to take up the search after search and rescue missions have failed, Kitten determines to hire boats, diving equipment and pay for it all with a benefit concert. Battling against her increasing mania, her friend Manfred tries to calm and dissuade her. Like last year's Criminology, Kemp's play spends a lot of its time representing visually and dramatically the state of severe mental illness, ...

Peaches and new backing band Sweet Machine played the Palace (formerly the Metro) on 1 October 2008 and I was there to see her for the third time (previously I saw her at the Corner hotel in Richmond in 2004 and in 2007 at the Prince in St Kilda). It was a brilliant anarchic gig. She played all the crowd favourites and some new songs from a forthcoming album, and told the crowd Australia was the first place she was playing the new songs. Guitarist Saskia joined Peaches to sing ‘Shake yer ... read the complete postFitzroyalty - hyperlocal news and reviews ...

I like to wander the aisles of Flinders Organics (Flinders Organics, 260 Flinders Street) for my snacking needs – my current favourites are the salty, crunchy beetroot chips, followed by Loving Earth chocolate, especially the Activated Almond and Purple Corn flavour – sounds weird, but extremely tasty and reputedly full of antioxidants. Loving Earth choccie is a Melbourne brand, and is organic, raw, vegan, ...

Mezzanine, 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne; 03 9650 4399Ah, Mr Christopoulos, what good things you have bestowed upon Melbourne and her citizens who wish to be nourished by noble traditions of food and coffee service. New look MTC

The MTC launched its 2009 season on Monday night, no doubt with fountains of champagne and speeches. Your faithful blogger was moping at home instead of hobnobbing (it's been a tough week), but despite her social delinquency the PR staff provided a handy media package which she has been broodily contemplating for the past few days. You can check out 2009 for yourself on the MTC's funky new
