Niagara Lane in the city
A little trip back in time is always nice on a sunny Saturday morning.... and that is what we got at Grigons & Orr in North Melbourne. Granny Davis is the matriarch of this fine corner store that has a few tables dotted outside and about five more inside, so don't bring all your friends and family to this special little spot for breakfast - just a special few. There are plenty of necessities on sale - lollies, papers, fresh butter and milk, custard powder and free range eggs. But if you don't need for any of these, trust me you ...

Review by Cabbage:After a long week at work we decided that cooking was out of the question, so my family and I headed out for a night into the heart of Melbourne to try out Won Ton House on Russel St. The decor, was just as you would expect, plastic tables and chairs downstairs. Whilst upstairs large round wooden tables were scattered around the room with matching ornate chairs. To relieve the chill three out of the four of us ordered our two favourites; Wonton Noodle Soup and Prawn Dumpling Noodle Soup, along with these we had the Combination Chow ...
North Melbourne has been my home now for about nine years. When we first moved here, it bore only a superficial resemblance to the suburb I’d worked in 12 or so years before. The Town Hall pub had changed – it was still a bit grungy, but in a comfortable way. The 80s pink and black “El Dorado” on Leveson Street, once a stop on the after-work drinks circuit for cheap pots and massive plates of nachos, was undergoing a transformation into a polished concrete-and-glass bistro/pub. The Court House, which I’d remembered as my alcoholic boss’ last resort when escaping ...
Waiting for the lights to change @ the corner of Collins Street & Russell Street – downtown Melbourne.
170-190 Russell Street, central Melbourne. ‘Melbournes best example of Japanese inspired Brutalist archicture whre off-form concrete emphasizes structure and function. The balustratre treatment and load and support structures are reminiscent of Kenzo Tanges Kagawa Prefectural Offices in Japan 1958. A mixed use building with an office block surmounting the carpark resembling a giant television set. The effect is of a series of floating decks, making a much more interesting carpark form. When built, the innovative design was hailed as new futuristic concept for the modern city.’ www.walkingmelbourne.com
My review of the MTC production of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party was in yesterday's Australian. Lots more to think about, and I hope I get a chance to do so (time is in short supply in Ms TN's world): on the one hand, how liberating to see these excellent Indigenous actors on the MTC stage; on the other, how disappointing that their talents are not fully exploited. It's an intelligent

Arm SlingCurrently nestled in Gallery 3 is Alana Clifton-Cunningham's fabulous show, Visible Markings: New Knitting. Exploring the nature of wool and pushing the boundaries about the way the material can be manipulated, Alana creates spectacular 3D tactile works of art that would look good on your body or on a wall. Most of the works have been knitted using a machine, while some are hand knitted and are truly a sight to behold.Alana's exhibition will be on until 25 July. We'll be featuring Alana in an upcoming edition of Introducing... so stay tuned for that!In the meantime, a word from ...
It’s been two years since Lee Lewis published her trailblazing essay Cross-Racial Casting: Changing the Face of Australian Theatre Platform Papers (# 13, 2007). In it she asked, among other things: At what point will a (non-white) actor with discernibly accented English be cast in a Pinter? Julian Meyrick has now answered that question. His production of The Birthday [...]
32 Bourke Street, Melbourne Phone 03 9650 7020 ‘Takumi‘ in Japanese literally translates as connoisseur, but to me it now just means a place to find some rather great Japanese food. The restaurant specialises in sumibi yakiniku (smokeless grill), and as mentioned previously, wagyu. So with friend Bria in tow, we decided to see what they did for dinner (see post about the bento lunch here). They offer a number of set menus and banquets for the indecisive, and shabu shabu, but on this occassion we decided to jump straight into the a la carte. To start with we chose the salmon carpaccio – ...
32 Bourke Street, Melbourne Phone 03 9650 7020 Takumi is a newish authentic Japanese restaurant located at the top end of Bourke Street. Specialising in wagyu and yakiniku (Japanese BBQ), our first experience of Takumi was for lunch, although we were so impressed, we soon went back for dinner. At lunch they have a couple of bento on offer; hamburg (which is what I got above), unagi (eel), beef sukiyaki (sweet onion sauce), beef yakiniku (BBQ), ebi fry (prawn), gyoza (pan fried dumpling) or wagyu beef curry (self explanatory and awesome). These bento come with miso soup, and cost just under $14. Great ...

When Tony Starr dreamt up The Kitten Club, he wanted Melbourne to have a venue reminiscent of nightspots from the 50s and 60s combining a bar, with great food, and excellent live entertainment. The upstairs Galaxy Space and Love Lounge have played host to a range of live music including jazz, Latin and swing, comedy, cabaret, burlesque, film, fashion parades, digital installations, theatre pieces, art exhibitions and product launches. Hanging rails for artwork (In the Love Lounge only).

Thread Den also features in a film clip by local pop act The Wellingtons. Future uses include fashion shows and textile exhibitions. We welcome anyone with ideas for other possible uses to contact us. Upstairs retail space and sewing lounge, with multiple rooms, high ceilings, white walls.
The Workshop not only boasts one of Melbourne’s most intriguing new bar designs, but is also a perfect illustration of Melbourne’s notorious underground cultural scene. Developed from the shell of an old motorcycle repair shop, old relics of its past can be found in every corner. Monthly art exhibitions showcase some of Melbourne’s best ‘up and coming’ young street artists.
