I have heard, and read, many a good thing about Red Spice Road. The deal was clinched when a few colleagues had gone over for a dinner early one evening and came back absolutely raving about their early bird menu. We were going to see Beatlemania* on the night so we thought we would pop in for an early dinner. They have an early bird dinner special which is three shared main courses and shared entree for $25. Look, let me get straight to the point before you read on: it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever ...

eh mugs…

It's been muggy. That is the reason I left Queensland. I hate the humidity. There are other reasons too, but I'll leave it at that. Today in the shop I had beads of sweat on my forehead and lip and no cool breeze for relief. And yesterday was basically hot, riding in the sun. It felt like summer had started already. Damn. I'm not ready. I might never be ready!I am also quietly horrified that it is already almost November, as I realized today it's Melbourne Cup long weekend and the city will be full of drunken suits and fascinators. ...

Liaison’s macaron

Liaison's macaron: not the best looking but still delicious It’s not all about macarons… Although, realistically there will be a lot of macaron-talk on this blog because frankly I am obsessed. Due to my wheat allergy, previous food popularity waves have passed me by (I couldn’t indulge in churros or cupcakes), but now the macaron is on the scene and it is gloriously wheat-free. As mentioned by Saskia, our own macaron efforts left a lot to be desired (despite their delicious fillings).  Until we attempt to scale the macaron making summit again I am content to try to sample some of the Melburnian macarons on offer. Syrup and ...

I normally bring my lunch into work so that I have time to fit in a gym session in my lunch hour. However, when I’m disorganised about my lunch, I tend to use it as an excuse to be disorganised about the gym too. So today, lunch-less, I abandoned my gym gear for the second day in a row and headed to Migo’s for a quick sandwich. Migo’s is a cute and stylish hole-in-the-wall cafe typical of our city’s laneways, and what makes it stand out is their roast duck sandwich ($8). You wouldn’t believe how good toasted Turkish bread can taste ...

Burger Monster

RAAARRAARARRARARRR!!!!! WARARRRARRRRAHHHH!!!!! That’s growl of the burger monster wailing out to tell you it’s lunchtime in the city.In one of the holes in the wall of the Equitable Place laneway that runs perpendicular to Collins and the Little Collins and between Queen and Elizabeth, there lies a monster of a burger. Now if you’re having trouble finding it, just head along Little Collins and there’ll be a dedicated lady in an oversized burger costume pointing the way.Get past the gimmick, the burgers are quality. You can go the small cheeseburger but hungry people will have the double. That’s two very ...

Despite being the hottest and stickiest day in Melbourne for the last 6 months, Melbourne was still treated to a musical banquet.

One of the most advertised features of the Melbourne International Arts Festival is Peter Greenaway’s ‘The Last Supper‘ multimedia extravaganza. The interior of North Melbourne Town Hall has been transformed to mimic the interior of the St. Maria della Grazie Church in Milan – a ‘clone’ of da Vinci’s masterpiece painting high on one wall, and a table stands in the middle of the room with all of the items shown in the painting reproduced in what looks like white plaster. from exhibition media; click on photograph to link through to original source I haven’t seen the painting in person and I ...

My Vietnamese friend’s Malaysian friend and the Malaysian friend’s Singaporean friends all agree that Malaysian Oriental Wok serves one of the best Hainanese chicken rice in town. At this strictly no-frills joint, for $9.80 you get a pink plastic plate of rice topped with soy-drizzled chicken, a sprinkle of spring onion, a small dish of spicy sambal and a bowl of chicken broth, namely all that jolly fat from the chicken boiled up into a soup. This version is missing a few of the usual accompaniments – the chicken should normally be a white-cut chicken with the soy sauce, ginger/spring onion sauce and the sambal on ...

Social Roasting Company

Think you’re leading the moral count for the day just because you drink organic black stuff? Don’t ya? DON’T YA?!?!Well the Social Roasting Company just has to take it one step further. Not only do their 3 locations source only ethical beans, but also do their bit for Melbourne’s less fortunate by providing an opportunity to learn all facets of the coffee trade. Just to rub it in they transport wholesale coffee packs via modified two wheelers. Not feeling too good now are ya? Should be disgusted with yourself. Time to change baristas.------Where? 5 McKillop ...

A word from Gracia and Louise

Something mighty peculiar was afoot but I was hard-pressed to say for certain what it was II (left) and I (right)Guidance for those curious,A key to help make your own world visible is an amalgam of sentiment and prose pulled from the pages of Hermann Hesse’s novel Der Steppenwolf (1927).Spoken in warm voice by Pablo to Harry: ‘I can throw open to you no picture-gallery but your own soul. All I can give you is the opportunity, the impulse, the key. I help you to make your own world visible. That is all.’ [1]From such we took impulse and ...

Melbourne Milan 09

Melbourne and Milan – two of the world’s great fashion capitals – were brought together in a gala event last Saturday night that celebrated the creative and fashionable cultures of the two cities. In the spectacular setting of the Palladium ballroom at Crown Casino – home to iconic events such as the Brownlow award and the Logies – guests were treated to dinner, fashion parades by two noteworthy designers and a performance by Natalie Gauci. The event, hosted by the Italian Chamber of Commerce, was a fundraiser for the children’s cancer charity, My Room, supporting the oncology unit at the ...

And it’s a…..GOAL! After the disappointing misstep of Grossi Florentino Grill, Guy Grossi’s empire has redeemed itself on this blog by delivering the goods at Grossi Florentino Cellar Bar. The waxed wood interior of the Cellar Bar is a beautiful narrow space straight out of la dolce vita Italy but note that it is really only suitable for intimate dates for two or single diners. As we were four we sat outside in faux-Spring weather on Bourke Street.     The simple one page menu is straight-down the line Italian and we were all very happy with our choices. My fleshy grilled sardines ($18) were ...

Cafe Vue at 401 St Kilda Road

Shannon Bennett seems to have wowed Melbourne with his successful Vue De Monde restaurant so we were very glad to hear that his second Cafe Vue was situated just outside the CBD, a much more accessible location. As usual, we were both over-excited at the thought of sampling what the genius Mr. Bennett had to offer on a more affordable scale and this is how our first visit went. 401 St Kilda Rd (near the corner of Toorak Rd). http://www.vuedemonde.com.au/cafe-vue.aspx"Cafe Vue had a nice ambience - it was spacious and modern with nice french touches here ...
