“In the room the women come and go Talking of Michelangelo” – T.S. Elliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock “What shall we use To fill the empty spaces Where we used to talk?” – Roger Waters, Empty Spaces I heard about the opening last month of Dear Patty Smith, a new gallery in Fitzroy. It was just the opening of the space; there was no exhibition, just a space. And as people arrived at the gallery there was less and less of the space. It would have been better if they had kept the doors locked then the space would have been perfect. In ...

Printmaker Rhyll Plant's Rhyme and Reason, currently on at the Castlemaine Phee Broadway Theatre foyer, presents a selection of prints featuring imagery gleaned from childhood rhymes and verses. Rhyll also has a very enviable day job as a 'professional scientific illustrator' at the Museum of Victoria - how wonderful!I have long borrowed images from the natural world in my capacity as a professional scientific illustrator with the Museum of Victoria. My creative art is similarly enriched. The Craft Cubed theme of childhood for 2010 has inspired me to create an exhibition of original prints ...
Another night of fashion at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, this time for the young and fresh looks of Alice McCall, Arabella Ramsay, Bettina Liano, Gorman, Leopold, LIFEwithBIRD, Manning Cartell, Nevenka, Nicolangëla, Obüs and Wayne Cooper. My tongue-in-cheek conclusion: quiffs are in fashion. Big quiffy fringes are not really my look, but they sure add height to models, and ‘edged out’ (as Tyra Banks would say) some of the more feminine and frilly looks of this parade. My neighbour’s fashionable quiff also managed to obscure many of my camera angles, so you’ll have to forgive the quality of some of the photos. ...

And interview with Nadja Kostich, director of upcoming play Bare Witness. Interview by Paul Andrew, published on Australian Stage Online. See the interview in its original context here. Bare Witness by Mari Lourey draws on the real life experiences of photo journalists and foreign correspondents in the Balkans, East Timor and Iraq, roles which have become increasingly dangerous, while their moral validity is increasingly questioned. Australian Stage’s Paul Andrew speaks to Director Nadja Kostich ahead of the show’s Melbourne season. What stories do you feel are most urgent for theatre right now? Stories with heart. Real stories about us. Difficult stories. Poetry of the people…for the people. I’ve ...
An article about Bare Witness from Theatre People. See it in its original context here. CelesteUsing the medium of paper, Stephanie Hicks' A Short Season looks at how our childhood recollections inform our understanding of it. Crafting her small-scale collages and three-dimensional sculptures from vintage materials gleaned from books, magazines and old letters, A Short Season is a collection of beautifully delicate paper works (including a range of colourful wreaths!).The exhibition is on till this Saturday at NO NO Gallery in North Melbourne, so make sure you see it!Elegy (detail)My collages explore a shift in the relationship between children and the natural world. Today we have a guest post from Jetsetting Mum after her recent visit to Melbourne. What can I say, she really didn’t like Seoul Restaurant. Ever since we came back from a trip to Seoul a few months ago, Jetsetting Dad and I have been yearning for some good authentic Korean food in Australia. We ate quite a variety of good quality Korean food when we were there which enabled us to acquire a broader knowledge of the Korean cuisine (if nothing else, we can, at least, tell what a good kimchi should taste like). During a recent visit to Melbourne, JD ...

Federation Square Melbourne 28 Aug 2010 Activities continue to bubble along at Federation Square during this stimulating festival. A personal highlight has been the book launch of Mary Delahunty’s work, “Public Life Private Grief”, on a Melbourne Winter afternoon, August 28th 2010. Interviewed by ABC journalist Kerrie O’Brien, at Feddish Café/Bar & Restaurant in Federation Square, the audience was guided through the trials and tribulations of the public life of Mary in the Victorian Government, where challenges needed to be met, allegiances formed and held, and personal life had to be sometimes squeezed into the small spaces in between. With 20/20 hindsight we might ...
We hope you managed to catch Emily O'Brien's series of hand moulded polymer clay figures from her solo exhibition HYPERBOLIC DOUBT, which was recently shown at Mailbox 141 on Flinders Lane and guest curated by Kim Brockett.Borrowing from childhood myth, fable and folklore, HYPERBOLIC DOUBT explored the less savoury side of twinkly fairytales, reproducing characters such as the Tooth Fairy, the Minotaur, Medusa, various old crones/witches/warlocks etcetera. HYPERBOLIC DOUBT is a journey of co-discovery through integration of thought, feeling, agency, and ...

Melbourne has its own semi-official Whedon Fan Club in The Melbourne Browncoats. Their website describes the following: About Melbourne Browncoats Welcome to the new home of the Melbourne Browncoats! The Vibe of Melbourne - Federation Square Ever unsure if maybe you are on the inside of a building looking out, or on the outside looking in?? Federation Square on the Yarra River in Melbourne strikes me just like that. Soaring steel framework weaves in and out of the building, with panels of stone. Shapes skew left and right. The cobbled forecourt leads you in toward a labyrinth of restaurants, stores and galleries. Each nestles in corners, walk amongst them and explore. You look out to see the Yarra flowing past from angled viewpoints. It is so much the vibe of Melbourne; a ...
When I first moved to Melbourne, the first couple of books I bought for my new life were: 1. The Age Good Food Guide; 2. The Age Cheap Eats; and 3. A Melways. In a way, you could say that my priorities haven’t changed much since then – the hunt for good food is a never-ending adventure for me. So I’m quite excited that I’ve managed to visit many of this year’s winners in The Age Good Food Guide 2011 Awards. Here is the complete list of winners, some with my previous reviews – congratulations! Vittoria Coffee Restaurant of the Year – Royal Mail Hotel Emirates Chef ...
Hoist Catching up again, having been in Melbourne for the weekend (thanks Debbie and James). There is absolutely nothing more exciting for me than taking my seat in the State Theatre in front of the beautiful red and gold curtain, waiting for it to rise on the latest Australian Ballet production. There’s always something happening in Melbourne so I have way too many (holiday snaps) photos to choose from. ’Hoist’ is an installation in Federation Square and is an inter-active comment about nostalgia. The pillow cases and sheets you see have mostly been written on by the artist but the little post-cards ...
It's still daylight when I leave work at night now. I walked home across Queensbridge.
Part II of my Taste of Melbourne Post concentrates on the majority of the dishes we had whilst working our way through the throng and bustle of the crowd... this is not counting all the other freebies of alcohol, cheese, lamb, chocolate etc...maze Restaurant & maze GrillBecause we've already been to Maze when they first opened in Melbourne, we were curious to their new menu (well the Boy was more so than I)...It was disappointing that not many of the head chef's were around and we didn't get to see Josh EmmettCured Marlborough king salmon with sweet corn, chorizo and ...
Some of Japan’s coolest made it to Melbourne for the Summer and we had a blast! Finally got the film back and scanned in. STD / Yoshie xxx
Today's featured event is Encase by Carly Grace, an installation at TROCADERO Art Space in Footscray that uses a squillion (ok, maybe actually only a few hundred) can bases as the basis (pun!) of the work.I have clear memories of drawing as a child, creating abstract patterns with swirling lines that covered large sheets of paper. I can remember the way I felt when I was drawing at this young age…musing, transient, engrossed in the process. Encase is an installation that has been expanded from my drawing practice in recent years, large-scale drawings that are ...
