Once again the City of Melbourne have produced a free pocket-sized booklet full of lots of ideas to inspire you to get out of the house and enjoy winter in Melbourne. This is a post to bookmark! I sat down with a cup of tea and flicked through the booklet, which you can pick up at many inner city shops, cafes and bars, as well as the Melbourne Visitors Centre, NGV and ACMI. It covers new places and old classics split up into five geographical sections, some of which have been reviewed on the blog before and some of which I’ve ...
Gold Leaf is relatively new to the Boy and I... we've heard many good things about the main branch in Sunshine, but have only recently discovered and decided to give the outlet at Docklands a try.NOTE: SEE!! I'VE already broken the train of the 1 week home cook and 1 week food review decision.. *sigh*If you've never been to Harbour Town before, it's really very easy to locate... just head towards the Metal stand of the now defunct Melbourne Southern Wheel/Eye/Thing... look up, and Gold Leaf is there =)Because of my backlog in postings and reviews... this is a 2 ...
One of my friends is currently living at the Docklands so today we met up for some Costco shopping & lunch. I had never been to Costco before & was pretty excited about it. I didn't buy too much today but I did buy a bulk pack of lint rollers (I was wearing black jeans & was having cat hair issues) & a big bag of dried blueberries. Any suggestions of what I can bake the blueberries into?We went for lunch at Va Bene Pizzeria which is his favourite local place. The wait staff were incredibly friendly & were happy ...
Matt Preston once wrote a wonderful article in Epicure, in which he spoke of the search for the best yum cha as some kind of existential crisis. As each soul rolls down the great conveyor belt in the sky it's stamped with Dragon Boat, Lucky Chan's, Silky Apple or any number of different Shark Fin variations. Sadly, this divine brand is not visible in the mirror, which means you can spend a month of Sundays driving from Box Hill to Brighton and from Little Bourke to beyond searching for your own perfect treasure. I am still looking. I love it! ...
I’m making sure that I will pop along to this sale, so I don’t really want to spread the word…however Tali Roth, jewellery distributors Polly & J and Skinny Nelson and Friends are holding an awesome warehouse sale on Thursday 13th May from 6pm to 10.30pm. Find it at 34 William Street Balaclava and it’s cash only. Sigh, there are about 10 pieces from Tali Roth I desire right this instant. Today at 5.30pm ABC’s Art Nation will be must-watch viewing for someone like me. It’s all about fashion blogging and features familiar lovlies like Lady Melbourne, Patty Huntington and Fashion ...
I’m all for comfort food, opaque tights and scarves (I think it’s a reaction to growing up in sunny Queensland) – yay for Marvellous March! Marvellous March is also the name of a handy little booklet produced by That’s Melbourne with details of the big events around Melbourne that will make you love autumn. This is a post to bookmark! Thanks to City of Melbourne, here are some highlights and photos: Moomba Festival 2010 Melbourne’s largest outdoor community festival makes a vibrant return to the heart of the city. From the spectacle of the Moomba Parade to the hilarious Westpac Birdman Rally, from ...
It’s summer. The sun doesn’t go down till 9pm. Everyone is feeling relaxed and refreshed. So why not spend some time discovering, or rediscovering, the great things Melbourne offers in summer? If browsing through MEL: HOT OR NOT doesn’t provide you with enough inspiration, pick up Hot Spots Summer Edition 2010, a cute booklet produced by the That’s Melbourne (City of Melbourne). It’s chock full of funky shops, cultural events, bars and eating out ideas interspersed with profiles of interesting Melburnians. The little book covers the CBD, North Melbourne, Carlton, Docklands and Southbank and inside you can find chirpy writeups on previous ...
The footbridge near the new Convention Centre finally has a name - Seafarers Bridge. I like it. And I love the bridge. Pigeon flambe at the CasinoWurundjeri Way sunset. Don't be fooled by the clouds in these pictures. It was about 35 degrees and a hot wind was mercilessly dessicating my eye balls. The things I do for blog.
Chillipadi @ Waterfront City Harbour Town Shopping Centre 10 Star Circus Docklands VIC 3008 +61 3 9670 2288 http://www.chillipadi.com.au/ For some reason, people seem surprised when I tell them that I have never had a meal at Chillipadi before. Given that I’m a lover of food and given that I’m in the city, like, pretty much all the time, the idea that I’ve never set foot in one of Melbourne’s most popular eateries astounds a lot of people (I have not been to Stalactites either…). I guess the main reason why I’ve been reluctant to go to Chillipadi is because of its reputation as serving basterdised ...
I don’t really know what I was thinking before my visit to Livebait. Scepticism was up there, along with a definite low expectation. I mean, Livebait does reside in the Docklands – hardly renowned for its culinary heavyweights. But that aside, every restaurant must be judged on its own merits and not on its geography. Livebait is located in the Docklands Newquay area and, as the name suggests, the focus is primarily on fresh seafood. The menu is dressed up under the guise of Japanese fusion which, in reality, means a few vegetables get the tempura treatment, some chicken is ...
Here’s a little inspiration (think brights) for your flirty frocks and seasonal swimwear for this Summer from Designers’ House at Docklands. It was 39 degrees yesterday so certainly time to put away the winter outfits now. Their recent runway featured labels like Modern Lovers, Little Joe by Gail Elliott, Rosemin, the Maharani Collection, swimwear pieces JETS and ML Denim. Enjoy! Pretty pictures by Patrik Nemes
Summertime and the dressing’s easy…Designers’ House presents a summer fashion event next Sunday the 13th December from 1pm on the ground floor of Harbour Town Shopping Centre (Docklands Drive, Docklands). Womens’ wear labels Modern Lovers, Little Joe by the gorgeous Gail Elliott, Rosemin and the Maharani Collection plus swimwear from JETS (depicted at right) and ML Denim will be on parade (along with pieces for kids by Sissi.G). The event also features music and entertainment and everyone is invited! While the Summer Fashion event itself is complimentary I can’t promise that you won’t be tempted to open your purses for some party ...
Melbourne brought the balmy evening, the Docklands provided the creative space and RMIT fashion students hosted an ambitious fashion parade. Upon arrival, I was glad I frocked up as students, families and friends dressed up to celebrate the collection, ‘Askew,’ designs from the 2009 RMIT Fashion, Textile Design and Footwear students. I expected garments to be over-adventurous but was pleasantly surprised with the ‘Askew’ collections. The fashion creations adopted on-trend and classic cuts with an independent style. The first parade kicked off with volume. Crisp white shirts with ruffled detailing and voluminous sleeves made a regular appearance for both men ...
The head is a canvas, open to the creation of many masterpieces by hair stylists. Some make it up as they go, others are structured in their pursuit, but if the American Crew 09/10 Face Off had anything to say on the matter, when it comes to hair fashion, there are no rules. American Crew, provider of grooming products for men, holds an Australian Face/Off competition each year, putting stylists to the test, on how to create looks for locks using the American Crew products. This year there were 600 entrants and only 20 finalists made it through, with only 3 ...
Looking for a studio space within a reasonable distance to the city for one architect and one fashion designer. Looking to share the space and amenities with others. No furniture required but space would need to be big enough to have at least two large desks and bookcases etc. In addition to this we are looking for a secure storage space or lock up garage attached or close by. The area of the office space depends on the environment, however the storage ( if included ) would need to be around 20sqm. The attached storage would be good but not essential. Please contact Ben stibhaus@gmail.com 0411 22 ...
Can you believe it’s the end of October and they’re erecting the Christmas tree at City Square already? Events this week: preview of The Brothers Bloom with Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz; preview of Jane Campion’s latest film Bright Star, starring the gorgeous Abbie Cornish; glamming it up for homeless shelter charity Many Rooms at the inaugural A Moment in Morocco Docklands Ball on Friday 30 October; checking out When the Rain Stops Falling, the latest production from ...
It had been a while since I was last in Yarraville. My last visit saw a trip to Ballarat Street’s Café Fidama, a simple yet enjoyable evening from memory. I have only fond memories of the street and suburb so I was quietly chuffed to be returning once again to the small foodie enclave. This time to Bopha Devi. I must confess to being a little green when it comes to Cambodian food. Whilst I had an idea that it would be similar to that of Vietnamese cuisine, I was not prepared for the variety that it offered. But to the cuisine ...
Swap My Style returns to Melbourne this Thursday 24th September from 6pm at Alumbra (Central Pier, Harbour Esplanade in the Docklands) – a way to swap up to five of your pre-loved fashion pieces with other stylish locals who want to go easy on their wallets and the planet. But Swap my Style is so much more than a simple fashion exchange (though a new wardrobe for next to nix sounds appealing enough). It also features a glass of Deutz Marlborough wine on arrival, free makeovers, mini manicures, a skin clinic and hairstyling. Australian designer labels can be found in a ...
Pandora’s Wonderland showcased race wear, racier lingerie, resort wear and menswear. Atop these designers collections sat the works of the extraordinarily talented Melbourne milliner Marilena Romeo. First down the runway was K.B.A.D (Karin Bochnik Altman Design). Launched in 2007, K.B.A.D. sent out a collection inspired by icebergs consisting of graceful, diaphanous frocks. Soft sheer layers, razor sharp lines and specially crafted fabrics worked to imbue the collection with the effect of light and movement in a glacier. K.B.A.D was followed down the runway by Kuwaii run by Kristy Barber who studied right here in Melbourne at Box Hill Tafe. Kristy’s collection ...
Eco-Luxe Fashion Exposé (ELFE) was a fashion event to showcase environmentally sustainable fashion. The luxurious venue, Alumbra, hosted the event and transformed it’s main room into a runway with surrounding market stalls and display booths of the collections on show. Rachael Cassar’s ‘Ruby’ collection featured multiple black pieces in exclusive fabrics and interesting styles. Rachael sources vintage fashion and re-uses the fabric to create a her garments for her own label. It was a striking collection featuring voluminous skirts and dresses, chiffon fabrics and boleros embellished with this seasons tribal feathers. Waistlines were also a feature and sequins made a ...
EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW Arrr... Me Hearties!!!!!!!(Ninja and Pirate co-mingle for an afternoon....)Apparently, 30th August is 'Melbourne Day', when the first European settlers sailed into the Yarra River and disembarked from their timber ship, the Enterprize, to found this city. To commemorate, a replica of the Enterprize was berthed in the Waterfront City marina, Docklands. How could I not climb aboard?I wish I could say something really exciting about the whole thing, but I have nothing. It was crowded with tourists so it was difficult to see anything noteworthy. The living quarters underneath the deck is very small and I guess, ...

It was to be our final meeting whilst the BFF was here (apologies for the lateness). We were here on Wednesday (12th of August), so not that long ago...We decided to come here as we wanted to have Greek food and the BFF's man wanted steak.. and we thought, why not try something different?Docklands... is pretty dead... Okay, I lie... it is extremely dead... I can't remember when it used to be this quiet... yes, I know, it was a weekday... but I have never seen a place so dead before...Apart from Man Mo (A Malaysian Chinese Restaurant), all the ...
For the uninitiated ELFE stands for Eco-Luxe Fashion Exposé – it’s green, it’s stylish and it’s on the official schedule for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2009. The brainchild behind the event is eco-conscious designer Emily Highfield of Vintage Soul. Joining her at ELFE will be labels such as Lady Petrova, Made in Donald, Rachel Cassar, Eva Q, Obikinomi, Boche Collection, Kiss Chacey and Etiko. ELFE will be held at the waterside venue of Alumbra, 161 Harbour Esplanade Docklands on Wednesday 2nd September from 7pm until midnight. It’s a mini-night market (so save up and bring your wallets and purses) but ...
