Rally

So nice to see such a huge crowd out to stand up for our live music scene. Glad to hear the government has back-flipped. I liked the awkward politicians milling about on the steps gawping back at the crowd and I liked the feel of being in such a crowd for such a good reason. I'm going to post a swathe of photos, so you can try to spot the people you know in each one, and good placards too. Psychedelic Freaks Vote Too! Free Colin Hay! Blunderstruck! VIVE LE ROCK 24HR LOVE!Oh, music is the meat of all who ...

Where: Arts Centre Gallery 1 When: Daily until late, to 28 February Cost: Free Travel time: About four minutes by St Kilda Road tram from Bourke Street Verdict: A fascinating and insightful almost-hour. Travel experience: You get back out of life what you put into it. This electrifying exhibition gives a true sense of the energy AC/DC create and receive from their audience. The Arts Centre Gallery is one of my favourite city galleries – the perfect late drop-in or antidote to turning up to NGV International on ‘oh-no-I-forgot-it-was-Tuesday’. Often dedicated to performers, exhibitions are impeccably curated with fascinating memorabilia from the likes of Nick Cave, ...

Beaches

These glorious Beaches are going to the US to tour in March, so lucky we got to see them last night, before they leave. A wave of uplifting, jangling, precise layers of glorious noise. I was already quite happy considering I'd seen Breaking the Law and Zond in one night, but the Beaches were beautiful. Such pleasure in riding home with ringing ears on a rain-cooled night after days of oppressive heat.

Love noodles and cheap dates

In South Korea they have three Valentines Days. One for women to give chocolate to men, one for men to give chocolate to women, and one for all the people who didn’t get any chocolate to go and eat black noodles and mourn their single life. Here in Melbourne, there’s so much to do in the week surrounding V-day there’s no need for anyone to be eating the black noodles. Whether you’re loved up or romancing platonically, have fun doing any of the following date activities for free or not much more. The Humble Vintage Hire yourself and your special friend a pair ...

Are you The Walrus?

For many of us, Friday night means freedom. And for the next two weeks, it also means great music in the city as the Summer Covers series of free concerts continues. Rubber Soul is the  Beatles covers band playing at Summer Covers on Friday 12 February and we catch up with Rubber Soul – The Beatles Show guitarist, David Gillard.  We haven’t spied a yellow submarine parked outside one of the band’s shows, but these guys really do go the extra mile to reprise the excitement of those Beatlemania days. Have you ever been tempted to add your own ‘improvements’ to original Beatles ...

3 + 11 = Acoustica3 at Elevenses

Lost and Sound : the magic behind Acoustica3. Mellem Rose, Ella Sparkle, Eugenia Rosa and Shanny Sena. This is definitely one for fans of undiscovered, home-grown talent: Elevenses (one of our Hot Spots-featured cafes from the Northside) + Obscura + Sideways Studios have come together again to present the THIRD semi-acoustic performance of local Kensington and Flemington musicians. Acoustica3 kicks off at 4pm this Saturday, making for an ideal afternoon session of laidback beats as the sun goes down. They will be expanding the milk crate stage to bring you a delightful line up of local artists including Mr Brady, Konami Cheat, Ellen Kibble, The ...

A sorry day

Saying goodbye to one Melbourne's best live music venues, I was surprised and saddened to hear it is finished. I went to protest, and was very pleased to see the whole intersection closed down in honour of the Tote, and glad to hear of a decent send off with a brass band and a bit of jubilation. It just made me thirsty standing outside the pub, but hopefully it sent a message to someone.I hope it's not in vain. Write to somebody, sign a petition, let's not let bullshit licencing laws ruin what is good about Melbourne. Lucky you if ...

Composer/Sound designer needs room

I need a space/room. It only needs to be 3m x 4m. I am a composer for film and TV. It needs to be secure and relatively quiet.

top gigs of 2009

1 Pure Scenius – Brian Eno, Karl Hyde and the Necks at the Sydney Opera House Brian Eno was the best gig I saw this year – a fascinating and thrilling performance, with the additional status of being a rare and longheld ambition fulfilled. 2 David Byrne at Hamer hall This was the third time I have seen David Byrne, and perhaps the best, as the show was focused on the music he wrote with Talking Heads that was produced by Eno and on their new collaborative album. 3 Jarvis Cocker at the Forum theatre A joyous, fun, energetic and jaunty gig from Jarvis, ... ...

Jarvis through the kaleidoscope

The recent Jarvis Cocker concert at the Forum theatre was most excellent, and I took lots of photos. The best were included in my review, and worst got deleted. I kept looking at the ones in between and decided they were worthy of sharing. I’m still learning how to best use my newish digital camera, as its behaviour and sensitivity are very different to my previous one. I claim no artistic credit here – these are all camera accidents! I like them because they capture his unexpectedly frenetic performance.

Jarvis Cocker performed like the most worthy successor to John Cleese in the department of silly walks at the Forum theatre on Friday 11 December, and he and his band also made great music. It was the first time I have seen him and I was surprised by how energetic, even frenetic, he was on stage. His dork dancing is superb. Jarvis played a strong selection of songs from his two solo albums, including all my favourites (apart from ‘I will kill again’). I loved ‘Fat children’ and ‘Leftovers’ in particular. As you would expect if you’ve listened to his lyrics, ...

Ross Wilson’s Melbourne

Music legend, Ross Wilson, was spot on when he sang “good old Eagle Rock’s here to stay”. The legendary frontman from Daddy Cool and Mundo Rock will belt out some of our favourite rock anthems in Yarra Park as we ring in 2010 at the New Year’s Eve celebrations. He stops by to talk Melbourne, music, Movida and Midnight Oil. Ross we’re very excited to have you part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations this year in Melbourne. Do you have any new year resolutions for 2010? Professionally I’m looking forward to doing fewer but bigger shows. Personally, it’s the old battle of ...

Despite being the hottest and stickiest day in Melbourne for the last 6 months, Melbourne was still treated to a musical banquet.

Thanks everyone

A big thank you to all who came to last night performance/closing party, there was a great turnout and we couldn't have had a more fitting end to Nathan's exhibition. A special thank you to Jess and Jarrod of Free Choice Duo for playing last night, to Esther for taking photos, and most of all a big thank you to Sam our cleaner for making all those beer bottles disappear (strange because we weren't serving drinks last night - where there's a will there's a way...) It’s all about light and time and phenomena to some extent, like a rainbow or a gust of wind or even an eclipse or a green ray, things like that. And this is the language of light. It’s not the language of binary pixels.” Tacita Dean1 . “The value of her [Dean's] work, writes Winterson, is one of the virtues of art itself: it is ...

Exhibition dates: 25th June – 25th July, 2009 . . Marco Fusinato ‘Double Infinitive 3′ 2009 . . Marco Fusinato ‘Double infinitive 1′ 2009 . . ‘Double Infinitives’ by Marco Fusinato at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne is an excellent exhibition of large UV ink on aluminium images sourced by Fusinato from the print media. The images are made up of a dot pattern familiar to those who have examined photographs in the print media closely. Larger and smaller clusters of dots form the light and shade of the image. As you move closer to the works they dissolve into blocks of dots and become and optical illusion like Op Art from the 1960s. Fusinato contrasts ...

Zond

Yes ZOND. They made me grin like a gleeful bastard at the Edinburgh Castle last night. It seemed kind of inappropriate, even to me, that such a blatant racket should please me so. It made me want to damage my ears and also start a band with somebody talented. Again. It's the kind of music that only really makes sense to me live, so I forget how much I love it when I'm too busy hanging out in the cave making things and being a good wife, but fuck, it was good. Big thanks to Casswah and Band, The If, ...

The CUB Malthouse

The CUB Malthouse was originally built in 1892 as a brewery and malting works for Castlemaine Breweries. It was subsequently acquired by Carlton and United Breweries, who in 1985 generously donated the site as a new home for Playbox Theatre Company following the fire that destroyed the company’s original theatre in Exhibition Street. Malthouse Theatre has evolved out of Playbox Theatre, the nation’s most enduring theatre company dedicated to Australian playwrights and playwriting.
