Yesterday I shot the super rad 70s themed band Mr Brady. It was bucket loads of super fun, thanks to the lovely band, my excellent crew and the friendly staff at our locations - Lounge in Melbourne CBD and the Gem in Collingwood. Anyhoo, below are some behind the scenes shots taken by a member of the team mid shoot. Enjoy!directingsnappingplaying with lightMood: coffee, list of things to do

Wilson Glow

A central Melbourne car park.

In amongst its pages, Chris Parkinson’s newly published Peace Of Wall presents a view of the nation of East Timor that has seldom been contemplated outside of its boundaries – that of one of its strongest social engineering methods; street art. In honesty, I just binned the editorial introduction for this interview, in which I spieled [...]

Interview – Chico – Dont Sleep Magazine

I still remember, and have never returned, the very first Hype magazine I read. I’d been bumming around Cinema City in Perth with a few crew one Saturday afternoon, when someone surreptitiously pushed a copy into my hands. Strangely enough, it was seeing Australian graffiti from outside of our own little corner for the first [...]

Exhibitions This Week

Caroline Ierodiaconou’s “Untitled” exhibition at the gallery in the City Library has several large powerful figurative paintings and a large number of small drawings. The exhibition title “Untitled” is more like a ‘no comment’ than a lack of title. Ierodiaconou is not preaching at her audience, the paintings are not symbolic; they reflect the uncertain feelings of the audience without pathos. Her paintings have a clinical beauty and a sinister atmosphere pervades all of them. The images are powerful and disturbing reflecting our culture’s unease that the environment or even our bodies may be a threat. In one painting a ...

Exhibition dates: 19th March – 18th May 2010 . Curated by Mark Feary, this is a deliciously ironic exhibition that asks the audience to question the social and political construction of the blockbuster exhibitions regularly held by large museums around Australia; to question the role of the curator in assembling such exhibitions; and to question the cultural value of permanent collections of ‘Masterpieces’. Autumn Masterpieces displays work that is anything but permanent and undermines the process whereby museums construct frameworks for social understanding. The work, displayed in a roped off space on plinths of various heights, in cheap frames and at skew-whiff ...

Bus Projects – January

There is a lot to see at Bus Projects in January with five artists exhibiting in five different spaces. It is a good first start for the new year; I didn’t dislike any it but I enjoyed some more. In the main space is “For Illusion Isn’t The Opposite Of Reality” by Dida Sundet, an RMIT fine arts student. It is a fun exhibition with lots to look at and look at again. Her surreal photography is excellent, carefully staged with beautiful chiaroscuro lighting. It is like the Mad Hatter meets Hannibal Lector. The series of photographs was awarded two honorable ...

Summer light

I'm in love with the backlit, lens flare-y, hazy summer sunlight thing in photos at the moment. They make the day look all soft and hazy and golden. I want to experiment with this effect over the weekend... if it ever stops raining in Melbs. It's the middle of summer and I'm wearing a scarf, cardigan and winter coat as I type this, listening to the rain pour outside my window. But, while I nod along with everyone else who grumbles about the mercurial nature of Victoria's weather, I secretly love that it's so unpredictable and surprising.Mood: Mumford & Sons, housemate's ...

Australian photographer, Louis Porter, has found much more than a chronicle of car park construction and dished crossings in City of Melbourne’s archive of practical photography. You grew up in England and now call Melbourne home. What is special about this city that made you want to stay? Melbourne is a very good city for artists, the cost of living is low compared to cities like New York and London, but there are lots of galleries, suppliers ...

Vale Sue Ford (1943 – 2009)

. One thing always struck me about Sue Ford’s work when I saw it. The work had integrity. Whatever she produced it was always interesting, valid and had integrity. She followed her own path as we all do – and her voice was clear, focused and eloquent. I loved her series ‘Shadow Portraits’ – an erudite investigation into the nature of Australian identity if ever there was one! Vale Sue Ford. . The Age obituary for Sue Ford . . . The Corner

The corner of Collins Street and Swanston Street, central Melbourne - 1930.

Yesterday, I went to the Semi-Permanent design, photography and film conference. It was amazing. Two of my favourite photographers, the LA-based husband and wife team of Jeremy and Claire Weiss from Day 19 Photography, were speaking. (Links: their site, their blog) Their lecture was absolutely awesome. In a humorous, no-bullshit way they discussed their story, their approach and how much they love photographing friends and family best in the world. I really liked how they advocated the "don't follow 'the plan', just do it your way" approach. They also said that most of their best work has been achieved through ...
